How to Draw Mandy
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Mandy from Cartoon Network's The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a big oval near the top half of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for the Mandy’s head.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the oval, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Mandy's facial features later on.
Step 3: Right under the horizontal construction line, draw two half-circles as guides for Mandy's eyes. The half-circles should be on either side of the vertical construction line, and the one on the left should be a bit smaller because of the perspective.
Step 4: Under Mandy's head draw a square or trapezoid-like shape as a guide for the body. The top of the shape should be narrower than the bottom, and it should be about half the height of the original oval.
Step 5: For Mandy's arm guides, draw an angled line on either side of the sketch where the head meets the body. At the end of each line, draw a circle as a guide for her hands. The circle on the left side is hiding behind the body, so only draw the visible portion.
Step 1: Under Mandy's body, draw a two rectangle shapes as guides for her feet. The rectangles should tilt down diagonally just a bit, and the top corners should be hidden by the body.
Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Mandy shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Draw the eyebrows on top of the eyes by using the horizontal construction line as a guide. Mandy's eyebrows are basically long rectangles that are shaded. Mandy is an unhappy child, so give the eyebrows a diagonal orientation to create her scowl.
Step 9: Darken the lines for Mandy's eyes. Inside each eye, draw a half-circle for the pupils and shade them in.
Step 10: On the right side of the oval, draw a line that's similar to a question mark (?) minus the dot for her ear. Pay attention to the placement of Mandy's ear. It's below the horizontal construction line and to the right of the eye on the right.
Step 11: Draw Mandy's headband above her eyes as two long, curved lines. The lines begin high up above her eyes, move across her forehead and stop on top of the ear.
Step 12: Use the original oval as a guide to draw Mandy's head. Darken the line that makes up the oval, and when you get to the top, draw a curve line that creates two points on her hair.
Step 13: Draw the front part of Mandy's hair, her bangs, below the headband. The bangs consist of a curved line with a small spike near the middle. Draw a curved line below the eye on the right for her pouty mouth.
Step 14: Use the initial angled line and circle as a guide to draw the arm on the right. Draw the two lines for Mandy's arm as you follow the basic path of the guide. Draw a small oval for her thumb and draw a few curved lines underneath for the rest of Mandy's curled up fingers.
Step 15: Darken the lines that make up Mandy's dress and make them curvier. In the middle of the dress, draw a small flower. The flower is just a circle with five arcs around it for the petals.
Step 16: Use the line and half-circle on the left as guides to draw Mandy's other hand. Use two lines to draw the arm as you follow the basic path of the guide line. Draw a couple of small, curved lines inside the circle for her fingers.
Step 17: Use the rectangles under Mandy's body as guides to draw her shoes. Darken the outline of the rectangles and make the lines curvier. The top of the shoes should be narrower for her feet. Use a series of curved lines inside each shoe to create the shoe openings.
Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of a Mandy from Cartoon Network's The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase your pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Mandy! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Mandy drawing in its entirety.
Step Last: For a completely finished Mandy drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color her hair and the petals on the flower on her dress yellow. Her skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use orange or light brown. Her dress is pink, the center of the flower is blue and her shoes are black. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Mandy from Cartoon Network's The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.
