How to Draw Maleficent

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw the evil villain Maleficent from Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

How to Draw Maleficent Step 1

Step 1: Start to draw Maleficent with a shape similar to an egg pointing down in the middle of the page. Under the egg shape draw two curved, vertical lines. These shapes don’t have to be perfect. They’re just basic guides for Maleficent’s head and neck.

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the egg shape, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so they follow the contour of the shape. Draw two smaller lines in between the horizontal construction line and the bottom of the egg shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Maleficent's facial features later on.

How to Draw Maleficent Step 3

Step 3: On top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two shapes that resemble flat footballs for Maleficent's eyes. The shape on the left should be smaller because of perspective.

Step 4: Now draw guides for Maleficent's headdress. First draw a line similar to the letter M with the left stem missing above her eyes. Use the vertical construction line to indicate where the line dips in the middle, and it should end on top of the horizontal construction line on the right side. Above Maleficent's head draw two curved lines as guides for the horns.

How to Draw Maleficent Step 5

Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape for Maleficent from Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
