How to Draw Fry (Futurama)
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Fry from Futurama. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle on the page. This will be the basic shape for the Fry’s head. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Fry's facial features later on.
Step 3: Right below the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two circles as guides for Fry's eyes. The circle on the left should overlap the circle on the right.
Step 4: Draw a small oval under the right eye as a guide for Fry's nose. Part of the oval should be inside the big main circle and the other part outside. Pay attention to the distance between the oval and the vertical construction line.
Step 5: Draw a long U-shaped arc under Fry's nose. The line for this arc starts right where the nose meets the main circle, and it ends where the vertical line meets the main circle.
Step 6: Underneath the entire shape draw two vertical lines as a guide for Fry's neck.
Step 7: Inside the head and to the left of the eyes, draw a C-shaped line as a guide for Fry's ear.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Fry shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Darken the right end of the oval guide to create the tip of Fry's nose. Draw a bump from the top of the oval to the left eye to create the bridge of the nose.
Step 10: Darken the shape of Fry's eyes. The eye on the right is behind the nose, so don't draw the lower portion of it. Draw a dot inside each eye for the pupils.
Step 11: Use the initial U-shaped line as a guide to draw Fry's mouth and teeth. Darken the arc to create the upper lip and curve the line back toward the neck to create the smile.
Step 12: Draw a few lines inside Fry's mouth to create his teeth. Darken the lines at the bottom for Fry's neck. Draw a small bump at the top of the line on the right for the lower lip.
Step 13: Darken the C shape on the left for Fry's ear. Draw a couple of curved lines within the shape to represent the inner ear structure.
Step 14: Fry's hair is a bit tricky, so it's divided into two parts. First draw the front part of Fry's hair by drawing a line that starts a the tip of the ear and comes down and then back up several times, then moves up and right across his forehead in a curved path. The line moves up to create a spike on top. Draw a small bump over his eye to create his brow.
Step 15: For the back of Fry's hair, use the main circle's edge as a guide. Draw an M-shaped line on the left side for his hair that sticks out in the back and draw another spike at the front.
Step 16: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of the Fry from Futurama. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 17: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Fry! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Fry drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Fry drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color his hair orange. His skin is peach color, but if you don’t have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Philip J. Fry from Futurama.
