The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a big circle near the top of the paper as a guide for Cricket Green's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. With every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a cup or a lid.
Step 2: Draw a curved vertical line across the circle as a guide to help you place Cricket's facial features later. Draw a horizontal line for another construction guide. Curve the lines so that they contour to the shape of the circle.
Step 3: Under the head, draw a small circle as a guide for this Big City Greens character's body. The top of this circle shouldn't be visible. Make this circle small. It should be about one-fourth the size of Cricket Green's head.
Step 4: On the lower, right side of the body, draw an even smaller circle as a guide for the first hand. Draw an angled line from the hand to the head as a guide for Cricket Green's arm.
Step 5: To the left of the body, draw a long line that angles up as a guide for Cricket Green's other arm. Draw a small circle at the end of the line as a guide for the other hand.
Step 6: Under the body, on the right side, draw a short, vertical line as a guide for Cricket's first leg. At the bottom, draw an oval on its side as a guide for the first foot.
Step 7: To the left, draw another vertical line with a slightly smaller oval as a guide for this Big City Greens character's other leg.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 8: Inside the head, in the top, right quadrant, draw a big circle for Cricket's first eye. Use the initial construction lines as guide to draw the circle. The circle's left and bottom edge should touch these lines. Cricket has big eyes, so make this circle big. It should take up a lot of the quadrant's space.
Step 9: To the left, draw another big circle for Cricket Green's other eye. The right edge of this circle should touch the edge of the head, and the bottom should touch the construction line. The right edge of this circle should be hidden behind the first eye.
Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a big dot for the pupils on this Big City Greens character. The pupil on the right should be near the middle of the eye, while the one on the left should be closer to the right. Above the eyes, draw two small, bean-like shapes for the eyebrows. Draw Cricket's eyebrows directly on the edge of the big circle. You can shade them in now or color them later.
Step 11: Below the eyes, draw a big, curved shape for the open mouth. The top edge of Cricket Green's mouth should be very close to the eyes. The right side shouldn't extend farther than the eyes. The shape of the open mouth should be bean-like like the eyebrows but a lot bigger. Follow the curvature of the big circle as you draw the bottom edge of the open mouth.
Step 12: Inside the mouth, at the top, draw a curved line for the buck teeth. Draw a line inside the shape to separate the teeth. Draw a curved line at the bottom for Cricket's tongue.
Step 13: On the right side of the head, draw a curved line for Cricket Green's ear. Use the horizontal construction line as a guide for the ear's position. The shape should be similar to a backward letter C.
Step 14: Above the ear draw a long, horizontal line for the first part of the hair. On the ends of this line, draw two shorter lines that curve up for the front and back of the parted hair. Draw a long line from above the eyebrows to the right edge to complete the right part of Cricket Green's hair. Between the eyebrows, at the bottom, draw a small, curved, V-shaped line for the widows peak. On the left side, draw a long, curved line for the parted hair's other side.
Step 15: Draw two lines from the ear to the parted hair for the sideburn and back of this Big City Greens character's head. Draw a curved line from the bottom of the ear to the bottom edge of the big initial circle for the side of the head. Use the big initial circle as a guide to draw Cricket's cheek on the left side. Follow the guide but make the cheek wider. This line should start on the left side of the eye and then curve outward before ending on the bottom edge of the head.
Step 16: Draw the shape of the arm around the angled line on the right side of Cricket Green's body. Draw the lines for the arm close to the guide to keep the shape of the arm thin. Inside the small circle, on the right, draw a small, curved line for the thumb. Add the fingers along the bottom the same way. The other fingers are shorter, curved lines. Darken the left side of the circle for the fist. Add Cricket's shirt sleeve as a line at the top.
Step 17: Darken the left side and bottom of the small circle under the head for Cricket Green's body. Draw the overall straps as a small, rectangular shape under the head. Add a line to the right of that. Below the overall straps, draw two small circles for the buttons. Draw a few lines that connect the circles and the edge of the body to finish the torso.
Step 18: Use the angled line on the left side of the body as a guide to draw Cricket's other arm. Draw the shape of the arm around the guide. Keep the lines close to the guide to make the arm thin. Curve the shape where the guide line bends for the elbow. Add a short line inside the shape for the shirt sleeve. Draw a series of short arcs around the small circle at the top for Cricket's fingers. Draw the thumb on the right and the other fingers on the left. Darken the rest of the circle for the hand.
Step 19: Draw the shape of this Big City Greens character's leg around the guide on the lower, right side of the body. Make the leg thin. Draw a short line close to the bottom for the pant cuff. Darken the oval at the bottom for Cricket Green's foot. On the left side, draw three small, circular shapes for the toes.
Step 20: Draw the other leg around the guide on the left. Make it thin and add a line inside for the cuff. Darken the oval on the bottom for the foot. On the left side add three circular shapes for Cricket's toes.
Step 21: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your Big City Greens character using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use black for the eyebrows. Color the top part of the hair brown and the side light brown. Use yellow for the skin, dark brown for the inside of the mouth and pink for the tongue. Use light blue for the shirt and the cuffs and gray for the buttons. Color Cricket Green's overalls blue. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
