To draw the Grinch step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to go at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, and each step is explained in the text below the photo, so you'll know exactly what to draw in each step. The written step-by-step video tutorial:

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the Grinch's body. To draw the circle, first make four small marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid.

Step 2: Draw a vertical line across the circle as a construction line that will help you place the Grinch's facial features later. Curve the line so that it contours to the shape of the circle. Draw a curved, horizontal line near the middle for another construction line.

Step 3: On top of the head, draw a short line that slopes to the right as the guide for the hat. Draw a line that curves down toward the inside of the Grinch's head for the other side of the hat. Connect the lines at the bottom to close the triangle-shaped guide for the hat.

Step 4: To the left of the Grinch's head, draw a big circle using the four-marks method as a guide for the body. Don't place this circle too far off to the left, otherwise the Grinch's torso will be too long. Pay attention to the size of this circle. It should be a lot bigger than the head.

Step 5: Draw two curved lines that connect the circles to create the guide for the Grinch's torso. The line at the top should be long and curved, while the one at the bottom should be shorter and straighter. Draw a really long, curved line from the hat to the left side of the body as a guide for the bag.

Step 6: Starting on the left side of the head, draw a line that's similar to the letter L as a guide for the Grinch's arm. At the end of the line, draw a small circle as a guide for the hand. Above that, draw another circle as a guide for the other hand with a line on the left as a guide for the arm.

Step 7: Inside the big circle, draw an angled line as the guide for the Grinch's first leg. The line should be similar to a greater-than sign (>). At the end of the line, draw an oval as a guide for the foot. Under the big circle, draw another angled line with an oval at the end as a guide for the Grinch's other leg and foot.

That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.

Step 8: Use the triangle on top of the head as a guide to draw the fluffy lining on the bottom of the Grinch's hat. Draw a series of short, curved lines directly on the bottom edge of the guide for the fluffy lining. Curve the sides of the lining upward so that they wrap around the sides of the hat. Add another row of short, curved lines above the lower edge of the guide to make the lining thicker.

Step 9: Darken the sides of the initial triangle guide to create the shape of the Grinch's hat. At the top, draw two curved lines that come to point for the folded top part of the hat. On the tip of the hat, draw a pointy shape using a couple of curved lines for the thin pom pom.

Step 10: Inside the head, on top of the horizontal line, draw a couple of small shapes for the Grinch's eyes. Draw the eyes on either side of the vertical line. The bottoms should be round and the tops thin and a bit pointy.

Step 11: Between the eyes, draw a couple of curved lines for the Grinch's furrowed brow. On top of the eye on the left, draw the eyebrow using a series of sloping lines. Fray the top of the eyebrow. Add the eyebrow on the right the same way, only the top part will be hidden under the hat. Inside the eyes, near the top, draw two small ovals for the pupils.

Step 12: Between the eyes, near the bottom, draw a small, triangular shape for the Grinch's nose. Draw two tiny, curved lines along the bottom for the nostrils. Add a longer, curved line below the nose.

Step 13: Draw a wavy line from the bottom of the original circle to the horizontal guide line for the Grinch's smile. On the right side, draw the other side of the smile the same way using a couple of curved lines. The smile should be similar to a wide letter V. At the ends of the smile, draw a couple of curved smile lines. At the bottom, draw a line that's somewhat parallel to the smile for the Grinch's lower lip.

Step 14: Use the L-shaped line under the head as a guide to draw the Grinch's first arm. Follow the path of the guide and draw the shape of the arm around it. Curve the top part for the shoulder. Add a couple of short lines where the shape bends for creases. Keep the edges of the arm close to the guide so that the overall shape is long and thin. Draw a series of short, curved lines on the end of the shape for the fluffy part of the Grinch's suit along the wrist.

Step 15: Follow the path of the small circle to create the Grinch's hand. Curve the edges more as you darken the lines.

Step 16: Draw a series of short, curved lines along the shoulder for the suit's fluffy collar. The Grinch's collar should extend from the left side of the shoulder almost down to where the arm bends.

Step 17: Darken the top of the small circle for the back of the head. On the right side, make the Grinch's head thinner by drawing the edge closer to the eye. Make the bottom wider for the cheek. Add small, angled lines to the cheek for fur. Draw the bottom of the head between the lip and collar. Draw a curved line on the top, left side for the Grinch's other cheek behind the collar.

Step 18: Add the Grinch's other hand below the head by drawing a couple of wavy lines inside the small circle for the fist. The wavy lines create the knuckles. Inside the shape, draw a couple of short lines for the folded fingers. To the left of the fist, draw the Grinch's thumb as a small, curved, pointy shape. Add a couple of curved lines to the left for the fluffy wrist. Draw the thin arm around the guide line.

Step 19: Draw a series short curved lines above the top oval for the fluffy part of the shoe. Draw the shape of the Grinch's leg around the angled line. Curve the shape of the leg to follow the path of the guide. Add a few short, angled lines at the top for the fur on the leg. Darken the oval at the bottom for the shoe but make the tip pointier and curved.

Step 20: Darken the curved lines that connect the two initial circles to create the Grinch's torso. Draw a series of short, curved lines across the big initial circle for the fluffy lining at the bottom of the suit. Don't overlap the shape of the leg as you draw the curved lines for the lining. Keep the top and bottom edges of the lining close to each other so that the shape isn't too thick. Darken the left and bottom edge of the initial circle to finish the Grinch's body. Add some jagged lines for fur.

Step 21: Draw the shape of the leg around the angled guide line under the Grinch's body. Make the top wide and the bottom thin. Draw a few curved lines at the bottom for the fluffy part of the shoe. Darken the oval for the shoe but make the tip pointy and curve it to the right.

Step 22: Darken the line at the top to create the shape of the Grinch's bag. Follow the path of the guide but make the shape more angular to emphasize the stuff inside. Below the hand, draw a couple of short, vertical lines for the opening of the bag held shut by the fist.

Step 23: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.

Final Step: Color your drawing using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use red for the main part of the Grinch's hat, the suit, the shoes, the pupils and the bag. In "Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" cartoon, the Grinch uses gray bags, so you can color your bag gray if you'd like. Color the eyebrows black and the rest of the body green. Add yellow to the eyes. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw the Grinch at your own pace.
