Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Leela, the captain of the Planet Express ship from Matt Groening's Futurama. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: When learning how to draw Turanga Leela from Futurama, start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: The first step when learning how to draw Leela from Futurama is to draw a circle near the top of the page. This will be the basic shape for the Leela’s head. Leave enough room on the right side to draw her hair. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.
Step 2: Under the circle, draw an angled line as a guide for the bottom part of Leela's head. The line should be similar to a rectangle with rounded corners and the top missing.
Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across Leela's entire head shape, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you later on when you learn how to draw Leela's face.
Step 4: Directly under the horizontal construction line, draw a big oval as a guide for Leela's single eye. The vertical construction line should split the oval in half.
Step 5: Underneath the entire head shape, draw two small, curved lines as a guide for Leela's neck.
Step 6: Now learn how to draw Leela's nose and ear. Draw a small U shaped line under the main circle guide and on the left side of the vertical construction line as a guide for Leela's nose. On the right side of this Futurama character's head, draw a curved line similar to a backward letter C. This will be a guide for drawing Leela's ear later on.
Step 7: Draw a long line that starts on the top of the head and moves to the bottom right as a guide for Leela's hair. Curve the line so that it is similar to a backward letter S.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You now have the basic shape of Leela, captain of the Planet Express ship from the animated cartoon series Futurama! Now go in and tighten your Leela drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Now learn how to draw Leela's hair. Her hair is a bit tricky to draw, so it's divided into four steps. First draw the front part of her hair that consists of a zigzag line across her face. The line starts outside of the head shape on the lower left side and curved up across her eye. When it reaches the top right side of the main circle, it forms a V-shape, then moves back down to form another V-shape and ends at the top of Leela's ear guide.
Step 10: Use the top of the main circle as a guide to draw the second part of Leela's hair: the top part. Start on the lower left side and move up and across, following the basic path of the circle. Draw two jagged points at the top of Leela's hair, then draw a bump on the upper right side before ending on top of the ear guide.
Step 11: Now draw the top part of Leela's ponytail using the line as a guide. Follow the basic path of the line as you draw the the curved line on top. Draw a jagged point on the top part of the curve.
Step 12: Draw the bottom part of the pony tail to finish up Leela's hair. Use the initial line as a guide and draw two bumps on the bottom part of the Futurama character's ponytail.
Step 13: Now learn how to draw Leela's eye. Darken the oval to create Leela's single eye. Don't darken the left side of the oval because it's behind the front part of the hair. Draw two pointy lines on top for her eyelashes and a big dot inside the eye for the pupil.
Step 14: Darken the guide for Leela's nose and make the shape curve up just a tiny bit more. Darken the curved line for the ear as well. Inside the ear, draw a couple of curved lines to create the ear's inner structure.
Step 15: Now use the initial lines as guides to learn how to draw Leela's overbite and teeth. First darken the left side of the line under the original circle to create Leela's upper lip. Curve that line toward the ear and draw this Futurama character's smile underneath. Draw a couple of lines inside the shape for her teeth.
Step 16: Now learn how to draw Leela's lips. Draw a curved line around Leela's teeth to create her lips. The top lip dips down in the middle a bit, and the bottom lip overlaps the left guide line for the neck.
Step 17: Now darken the guide lines for Leela's neck. Draw a small curved line on top of Leela's head where her ponytail meets her head. This will create the hair tie that holds her hair together.
Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Leela, the captain of the Planet Express ship from the animated TV cartoon series Futurama. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Leela from Matt Groening's Futurama! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Leela drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Leela drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Leela's hair purple and her hair tie black. Her skin is peach, but if you don’t have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! Her lips are pink. That’s it! You have now learned how to draw Turanga Leela from Futurama.
