How to Draw Benson
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Benson, Mordecai and Rigby's boss from Cartoon Network's Regular Show. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: When learning how to draw Benson, start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a small circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Benson’s head. Leave enough room at the bottom for the body.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines a bit so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you when learning how to draw Benson’s facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw two circles right on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line. These are guides for Benson’s eyes.
Step 4: Draw a square-like shape under Benson’s head as a guide for the body. This square shape should be smaller than the circle for the head.
Step 5: Under Benson’s head and on either side of the body, draw two curved lines as guides for his arms. At the end of each line, draw a small circle that you'll use as a guide later on when learning how to draw Benson’s hands.
Step 6: Below Benson’s body, draw a couple of slightly curved lines as guides for the legs. The lines should be about as long as the body and head combined. The tips of the lines should angle forward as guides for Benson’s feet.
Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Benson from Cartoon Network's Regular Show. Now go in and tighten your drawing. When learning how to draw Benson from this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Darken the original circle to create Benson’s head. To create the shape on the head, draw a rectangle-like shape at the top. Draw a tiny line with a tiny oval at the tip to complete Benson’s head.
Step 9: Now learn how to draw Benson's facial features. Draw a small triangle-like shape under the eyes for Benson's nose. Use the construction lines as guides for placement.
Step 10: Draw a curved line over the eye guides to give this Regular Show character a furrowed brow. Darken the circles for the eyes and add a dot inside each for the pupils. Draw a couple of lines under each of Benson's eyes for a stressed look.
Step 11: Draw another curved line above Benson's eyes for an extra wrinkle. Because Benson is a gumball machine and has a glass head, draw a longer curved line on the left side of his face to represent the shine on the glass. Under the nose, draw another line for his mouth. Curve the line a bit to give this Regular Show character that angry scowl.
Step 12: Inside the main circle, draw a series of small, connected, curved lines to represent the gumballs inside Benson's head. Use the horizontal construction line as a guide for the placement of the gumball line.
Step 13: Use the square-like shape under the head as a guide to draw Benson's body. Inside the shape, near the top, draw a heart-like shape with a thin rectangle across it. Below that, draw a trapezoid-like shape for the small door that dispenses Benson's gumballs.
Step 14: Now learn how to draw Benson's arms and legs. Draw Benson's arms by using the initial lines on the sides of the body as guides. Follow the path of the lines and make the shapes thicker. At the end of the arms, use the small circles as guides to draw Benson's closed fists.
Step 15: Use the lines under Benson's body as guides to draw his legs and feet the same way. Follow the basic path of the lines as you make the shape thicker.
Step 16: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Benson, Mordecai and Rigby's gumball machine boss from Cartoon Network's Regular Show. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 17: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Benson! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Benson drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Benson drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color his skin blue-green. The shape on his head and his body are red. Benson's nose, arms, legs and the shapes on his body are gray. The top part of Benson's head is light blue, and the gumball part of his head is light red. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Benson, Mordecai and Rigby's boss from Cartoon Network's Regular Show.
