Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: To begin drawing Spike from My Little Pony, create a big circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the head. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a cup, a lid or any other object with a circular edge.
Step 2: Inside the circle, near the bottom, draw a curved, horizontal line to help you place Spike's facial features later. Above that, close to the right edge of the circle, draw a curved, vertical line for another construction line.
Step 3: Under the head, draw a small circle the same way as the first, as a guide for the body. Use the four marks to help you draw the circle. Pay attention to its size in relation to the head. Add two short lines that connect the two circles to finish the guide for Spike's body.
Step 4: Under Spike's head, draw the guide for the first arm as a short line with a small circle at the end of it.
Step 5: On the right side, draw a short, V-shaped line with a small circle at the end of it as a guide for Spike's other arm.
Step 6: Under the body, draw two L- shaped lines as guides for the legs. Spike has short legs, so don't draw these lines too long.
Step 7: Now finish up drawing the guide lines for Spike from My Little Pony. Add the guide for Spike's tail by first drawing a curved line on the left side of the body. Under that, draw a longer wavy line for the bottom edge of the tail.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 8: Starting where the construction lines meet, draw a short, curved line for Spike's nose. Curve the line toward the bottom so that it creates the top part of the mouth. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the shape right. Add a small slit for the nostril.
Step 9: Inside the head, draw the first eye by first making a small mark to indicate how tall it will be. Then add curved lines on the sides to create a big oval for the eye. The eye should be sitting on top of the horizontal construction line. On the right side, draw another oval for the other eye. Use the initial sketch lines as guides. The eye on the right should be smaller because of the way the head is turned. Make the outline of Spike's eyes thicker, especially at the top to represent eyelashes. Above each eye, draw a short, thick shape for the eyebrows.
Step 10: Now complete the eyes on Spike from My Little Pony. Inside the eye on the left, draw a small oval for the iris. Make four small marks to indicate the height and width of the oval, and then close it off with curved lines. Add the iris inside the eye on the right too. Draw it close to the left edge of the eye. Inside each iris, draw a very thin oval and shade it in for the pupils. Spike's pupils should be pointy at the top and bottom, like cat pupils. Inside each iris, draw a small oval at the top and couple of lines on the sides for glare.
Step 11: Under the top part of the mouth, draw a curved, vertical line for the bottom part. The line should extend outside of the initial circle. Close off the shape on the right side. Inside Spike's mouth, at the top, draw a V-shaped line for a tooth and a curved line at the bottom for the tongue.
Step 12: On the left side of the head, add Spike's ear by first drawing a shape similar to a greater-than sign (>). Use the horizontal construction line inside the head as a guide for the position of the ear. Close off the shape by adding three small arcs on the left side. Pay attention to the size of the ear in relation to the rest of the head.
Step 13: Add the spikes on Spike from My Little Pony by first drawing a tall arc right on top of the head. The arc should be tilted to the right a bit. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape right. Darken the top part of the horizontal construction line for the base of the spike. Lightly sketch three more arcs on the left side for the rest of the spikes. The spikes should gradually get smaller toward the left. Darken the lines when you get the shapes right.
Step 14: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of Spike's head. Darken the edges of the circle. Don't overlap the spikes or the ear when you darken the shape of the head. As you darken the lower, right side, curve the line outward more to create the cheek. Add a small, curved line under the mouth for the chin.
Step 15: Use the short line and circle under the head as guide to draw Spike's first arm. Draw the shape of the arm as two short lines around the guide. Draw four small, V-shaped lines along the bottom edge of the circle for the fingers.
Step 16: Draw the shape of the first leg around the L-shaped guide on the left. The shape of the leg should be wide. Add an extra curved line at the bottom for the foot. Add a couple of lines at the bottom for the toes and a swirly line in the middle of the leg for Spike's knee.
Step 17: Darken the outer edges of the guides under the head to create the shape of the body. Inside Spike's body, to the right of the arm and leg, draw a curved line for the edge of the scales.
Step 18: Now draw the scales on Spike from My Little Pony. Draw a series of short, horizontal lines in the front part of the body. Only draw about five lines for scales. Add a line to the left of the mouth too.
Step 19: Use the V-shaped line and circle on the right as guides to draw the other arm. Follow the path of the V-shaped guide as you draw the shape of the arm around it. Draw a series of short, V-shaped lines around the small circle for the fingers. Spike's thumb should be at the top, while the other three fingers should be on the right side.
Step 20: Use the L-shape line at the bottom as a guide to draw Spike's second leg the same way as the first.
Step 21: Darken the curved guides on the left side of the body to create the shape of Spike's tail. At the tip, draw an arrow-like shape for the end of the tail. Inside the tail, near the bottom, draw a line parallel to the tail shape for the edge of the scales.
Step 22: Draw a series of short lines along the bottom of the tail for Spike's scales. Draw a series of small arcs along the back for the spikes on the body. The spikes should be smaller the closer they are to the tip of the tail. Now you have a nice sketch of Spike from My Little Pony.
Step 23: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.
Step 24: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color Spike from My Little Pony using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use yellow-green for the spikes, the ear and eyes. Color the ear and bottoms of the eyes a bit lighter. Color the rest of the body purple except for the scales. Color lightly at first, then gradually build up to the level of darkness that you like. Color Spike's scales and the bottom part of the mouth yellow. Use dark red for the inside of the mouth and pink for the tongue. Remember to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
