The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a small circle near the top of the page as a guide for Drift's head. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a coin, a lid or any other object with a circular edge.
Step 2: Draw a small U-shaped arc under the head as a guide for Drift's jaw and chin.
Step 3: Inside the head, draw two intersecting lines as guides to help you place Drift's facial features later. Under the head, draw two short lines as guides for the neck.
Step 4: Draw a big oval under the head as a guide for Drift's chest. First make four small marks to indicate the oval's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Pay close attention to the size of the chest in relation to the head. Don't make the oval too big.
Step 5: Draw two vertical lines under the oval, one on each side, as guides for the midsection. Connect the lines at the bottom using a horizontal line to complete the guide for Drift's midsection.
Step 6: Under the midsection draw two short lines on either side as a guide for the lower torso. Finish the guide by drawing a V-shaped line at the bottom.
Step 7: On the top, right side of the torso, draw a small circle as a guide for Drift's shoulder. Under the circle, draw a U-shaped line as a guide for the bicep portion of the arm.
Step 8: Under the bicep, draw an oval-like shape as a guide for the forearm. Draw two short lines under that as a guide for the wrist. At the bottom, draw a small circle as guide for Drift's fist.
Step 9: On the left side, draw a series of similar shapes as a guide for Drift's other arm. Part of the arm will be hidden behind the torso, so don't draw the complete shapes. The bottom part of the guide, the small circle for the fist, should be fully visible.
Step 10: Under the torso, on the right side, draw long, U-shaped line as a guide for the top part of the leg. Under the leg, draw a small circle as a guide for the knee.
Step 11: Under Drift's knee, draw a smaller U-shaped line as a guide for the calf muscle. Under the calf muscle, draw two vertical lines as a guide for the shin section of the leg. At the bottom , draw a triangle- shaped line as a guide for the foot pointing forward.
Step 12: Now draw a series of similar shapes on the left side as a guide for Drift's other leg. The top of the leg and the calf section are U- shaped lines, the knee is a circular line and the shin section is two straight lines. At the bottom, draw a longer triangle-like shape because the foot is pointing to the left.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 13: Inside the head, lightly sketch two small ovals for Drift's eyes. Use the initial lines as guides to help you with the placement. When you get the size and position of the eyes right, darken the lines but make the sides pointier. Inside each eye, draw a tiny circle for the irises. In the middle of each iris, draw a dot for the pupils. Draw a tiny line over each eye for the eyelids.
Step 14: Above each eye, draw a long, rectangle- like shape for the eyebrows. On the eyebrow on the right, draw another small rectangle with a diagonal orientation for a bandage. Between the eyes, draw two short, curved lines for the bridge of Drift's nose.
Step 15: Below the bridge of the nose, draw an angled line across the head for the top part of Drift's mask. On each side, draw a couple of small rectangles for the mask's fasteners. Darken the bottom part. At the top, on each side, draw diagonal lines for the mask's straps.
Step 16: High above the head, draw a line that's similar to an upside-down letter V for the tip of Drift's spiky hair. On the left side, draw a curved line that connects the top of the hair to the head. Draw a series of short lines above the eyes to create the hairline. Add a couple more spikes at the top and a curved line on the right side that connects to the head.
Step 17: Darken the edges of the initial circle to create the sides of Drift's shaved head. On either side of the head, draw a small, curved line for the ears.
Step 18: Below Drift's mask, draw a curved , horizontal line for the top part of the collar. On the right side, draw a couple of curved lines for the edge of the collar. Add the left side of the collar using a short, vertical line. In the middle draw a long, vertical shape for the collar's design. In the middle of the vertical shape, draw a thin strip for the collar's zipper.
Step 19: Use the shapes in the middle as guides to draw Drift's shirt/torso. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the torso. Curve the lines more as you darken them for a more organic feel. Draw the top line higher than the guide. Darken the left side of the circle for the sleeveless shirt. Add a couple of horizontal lines near the top to emphasize the chest. Draw a couple of sloping lines higher up for the shirt's design.
Step 20: Use the shapes on the right as guides to draw the first arm. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the arm. Don't darken the lines below the forearm. That's where Drift's glove will go in the next step.
Step 21: Draw a curved, rectangle- like shape near the middle of the forearm for the top of the glove. Now darken the outer edges of the guides to create the wrist and the shape of the fist. As you darken the sides of the initial circle, make the lines wavier for the folded fingers and knuckles. On the right side, draw a rectangle for the padding on the glove. On the left side, draw a few curved lines for Drift's folded fingers.
Step 22: Use the shapes on the left side as guides to draw Drift's other arm the same way. First darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the arm. Then, near the middle of the forearm, start drawing the top of the glove. Darken the initial circle to create the fist but make the bottom part wavier for the knuckles. Use a few lines on the right side of the circle for the folded fingers and add a rectangle on the left side for the glove's padding.
Step 23: At the top of each leg, draw a rectangle- like shape for the big pockets on Drift's pants. The pocket on the left side should wrap around the leg, so the shape will be distorted. Inside each pocket, near the top, draw a line and a small rectangle. Add a few short lines in the middle for the pants' zipper.
Step 24: Use the shape under the torso as guides to draw Drift's legs. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the legs. Don't darken the shapes below the calves because the tops of the shoes come up pretty high. Near the bottom edge, make the lines wavier for the scrunched-up pants. Add a few lines inside the legs for the folds on the pants.
Step 25: Use the shapes at the bottom on the right side as guides to draw the first shoe. The top part of the sneaker comes up very high on Drift's leg. Use a couple of angled lines along the guides for this. Darken the outer edges of the guides, and then add a few shapes inside for the shoe's design. Draw a few curved lines across the middle section for the laces and make the sole thick.
Step 26: Use the remaining shapes as guides to draw the other shoe the same way. Darken the outer edges of the guides, and then add the design elements inside. The tongue on the sneaker should be very thick and pronounced. Make the bottom edge wide for a thick sole. Add a few lines across the middle for the laces and design. Add an arrow-like shape at the top too. Drift's sneaker should look almost like a boot.
Step 27: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.
Step 28: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your Drift drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use yellow for the hair and peach for the skin. Use dark gray for the mask, the top of the shirt, a part of the gloves, the pants and a part of the shoes. Parts of the gloves and pockets have pink and yellow highlights, so leave those sections blank. Use a bit of yellow- green and pink for the highlights on the shirt, gloves and shoes. Add a bit of light brown to the skin for shadows. I used light blue for the eyes, but Drift's eyes are actually brown, oops!
