Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing an egg shape that points down at the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just the basic shape for Rapunzel’s head.
Step 2: Draw two curved, wavy lines at the bottom of that shape. These will be the basic shapes for Rapunzel's neck and shoulders.
Step 3: Next draw two intersecting lines across the egg shape, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so they follow the contour of the shape. Draw two smaller lines in between the horizontal construction line and the bottom of the egg shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Rapunzel’s facial features later on.
Step 4: On top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two small shapes that resemble half circles for Rapunzel's eyes.
Step 5: Now draw guides for Rapunzel’s hair. On the top left side of her head, draw a curved line that moves down below her shoulder. Draw another similar line that goes to the right this time and meets the top of the right shoulder.
Step 6: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape for Rapunzel, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 7: Darken in the shape of Rapunzel's eyes and give her thick eyelashes on the top. Draw a curved line above each eye to represent her eyelids.
Step 8: Inside each eye draw a circle to represent Rapunzel's iris. Inside the iris, draw another circle and shaded it in for her pupil. Draw a smaller circle on top of the pupil as glare.
Step 9: Draw a series of tiny curved lines that sit on top of the smaller of the horizontal construction lines to create Rapunzel's nose and nostrils.
Step 10: Use the small construction line below the nose to help you draw Rapunzel's mouth. Her upper lip is similar to a wide letter M with a curve underneath it. Her lower lip is just a wide letter U. Draw small lines at the end of Rapunzel's smile.
Step 11: Rapunzel's long hair is tricky, so it’s divided into two parts. Using the initial lines as guides, draw the top and sides of her hair and make the lines a bit wavier. Now draw the part of Rapunzel's hair that’s on her forehead by using curved lines. Notice that the right side of Rapunzel's hair grazes her eye slightly. Use the image above for further reference.
Step 12: Give Rapunzel's hair more detail by drawing more lines throughout it to represent the different layers of her locks.
Step 13: Draw a curved shape above each eye to give Rapunzel her eyebrows. Her hair hides the right eyebrow, so only draw a portion of it.
Step 14: On the left side, draw a few more lines to represent the side of Rapunzel's hair and a couple of curved lines that are attached to her head for her ear.
Step 15: Darken Rapunzel's neck and draw a couple of curved lines below it to represent her collarbone.
Step 16: Draw the neckline of Rapunzel's dress by drawing a few straight lines. Then add a series of small curves above the lines for detail. A small oval with some curved lines on either side make up the laced bow in the front of the dress. Darken her shoulders too.
Step 17: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Princess Rapunzel. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 18: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Rapunzel from Walt Disney's Tangled! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Rapunzel drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Rapunzel drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Rapunzel's long hair is blond, so color it yellow. Color her eyes green and her mouth pink. Her dress is lavender, and the laced bow is pink along with the stripes on her shoulders. Rapunzel's skin is a peach color. If you don’t have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Princess Rapunzel from Walt Disney’s Tangled.
