How to Draw Maleficent
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw the evil villain Maleficent from Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start to draw Maleficent with a shape similar to an egg pointing down in the middle of the page. Under the egg shape draw two curved, vertical lines. These shapes don’t have to be perfect. They’re just basic guides for Maleficent’s head and neck.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the egg shape, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so they follow the contour of the shape. Draw two smaller lines in between the horizontal construction line and the bottom of the egg shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Maleficent's facial features later on.
Step 3: On top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two shapes that resemble flat footballs for Maleficent's eyes. The shape on the left should be smaller because of perspective.
Step 4: Now draw guides for Maleficent's headdress. First draw a line similar to the letter M with the left stem missing above her eyes. Use the vertical construction line to indicate where the line dips in the middle, and it should end on top of the horizontal construction line on the right side. Above Maleficent's head draw two curved lines as guides for the horns.
Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape for Maleficent from Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 6: Draw Maleficent's nose on the left side of the vertical construction line, and make it graze the left eye. The nose is just an angled line that sits on top of the smallest of the horizontal lines. Draw a small slit on the right to indicate Maleficent's nostril.
Step 7: Darken the shape of Maleficent's eyes and draw a thicker line above each eye to create her eyelashes. Inside each eye, draw a small circle and shade it in as her pupil. Draw an arc above each of Maleficent's eyes for her eyelids.
Step 8: Draw Maleficent's eyebrows above her eyes. Use the line on her forehead as a guide for the angle and shape of the eyebrows, which are basically just thick lines.
Step 9: Use the lowest of the horizontal construction lines to help you place Maleficent's mouth. Her upper lip is thin and is drawn with a wavy line. Maleficent's lower lip is thicker and is drawn with two curved lines.
Step 10: Draw the outline of Maleficent's face by using the line on her forehead and the egg shape as guides. Be sure to dip the line on the left side in toward her eye a bit to form her cheekbone and give her a long pointy chin.
Step 11: Use the lines above Maleficent's head to form the horns on her headdress. The bottom part of the horns should be thick, and they should get thinner the higher they go. Don't draw the points yet; make the ends flat. The right side of the headdress should come down toward the right side of Maleficent's face and form her jaw.
Step 12: Now draw the points on top of Maleficent's headdress. They should be pointing toward the outside in opposite directions. Inside the horns, draw a series of curved lines for extra detail. Use the image above for reference.
Step 13: Draw the back portion of Maleficent's headdress as angled lines similar to triangles behind her head. Draw two on each side of her face.
Step 14: Draw a few curved lines under her head for the top of Maleficent's collar. Darken the visible portion of her neck and draw a line within it.
Step 15: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Maleficent, the villain from Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the next step.
Step 16: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Maleficent! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Maleficent drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Maleficent drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Maleficent's headdress and neck black. If you like, you can leave a small section near every line in the headdress blank so that the lines stand out more. Her skin is light green, and her lips are red. Maleficent's eye shadow and collar are purple. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of the evil villain Maleficent Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.
