The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: To begin drawing Gary the snail from SpongeBob SquarePants, draw a circle near the top of the paper for the eye. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid.
Step 2: To the left, draw a partially visible circle for Gary's other eye. This eye is behind the first eye, so don't draw the right edge and make it a bit smaller.
Step 3: Inside the first eye, near the top edge, draw a small circle for the iris. Inside the second eye, close to the right side, draw a small, partially visible circle for Gary's other iris.
Step 4: Inside each iris, draw an even smaller circle for Gary the snail's pupils. Inside each pupil, draw a tiny circle for highlight. Shade the pupils. Don't overlap the tiny highlight circles as you shade the pupils.
Step 5: Under the first eye, draw two long, vertical lines for the stem that connects the eye to the head. Pay attention to the length of these lines in relation to Gary's eyes. The lines should curve inward a bit in the middle.
Step 6: Under Gary's other eye, draw two more long, vertical lines for the other stem. Tilt these lines slightly so that the bottom is close to the first stem. Make the middle of the stem narrow.
Step 7: At the bottom of the stems, draw a curved, horizontal line for the top part of Gary the snail's head. Sketch lightly at first. Don't overlap the first stem. This line should go behind it. When you get the line right, darken it. On the left side, curve the line down and to the right for the smile. Add a short smile line on the right tip.
Step 8: To the right of Gary's head, lightly sketch a long, wavy, horizontal line for the bottom part of the shell. Curve the right tip of the line up a bit. When you get the shape of the line right, darken it. On the left side, draw a short, curved line for the rounded front tip of Gary's shell.
Step 9: High above the bottom of the shell, make a small mark to determine the height of the top of the shell. Make a small mark on the right for the width of the shell. Connect the top mark to the eye using a curved line. Draw a curved line from the bottom of the eye to the bottom of the shell for the left edge of Gary's shell. Don't overlap the eye. Connect the marks on the right side to complete the shape of the shell. The top part of the shell should be round and wide, and the bottom part should be narrow.
Step 10: Draw a short, curved line under the mouth for the bottom part of the head. Draw a long, wavy, horizontal line below the eyes and the shell for the bottom part of Gary's body. The line for the bottom part of the body is made up of short, curved lines. On the right side, curve the line back toward the shell to create a thin tip and finish the shape of this SpongeBob SquarePants character's body.
Step 11: Starting at the bottom of Gary's shell, draw a line that curves up and swirls in the middle for the shell's design. Sketch lightly at first so that its easy to erase if you make a mistake. Darken the line only when you get the shape right. Make the tip of the swirl pointy. Don't curve the spiral too much. Just a simple single curve will do. Don't make the shape too thick. The end result should be similar to the letter P or an upside-down 6.
Step 12: Draw five small ovals along the top side of Gary's shell to finish the design. The top-most oval should be bigger than the four ovals on the sides.
Step 13: Using a pen or marker, carefully draw over the lines to make your Gary drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color Gary from SpongeBob SquarePants using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use yellow-green for the eyes and bottom of the body. Use orange for the irises and light blue for the rest of Gary's body. Color the main part of the shell pink. Don't overlap the design! Color the ovals bluish-purple and the spiral dark red. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
