How to Draw Squidward
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Squidward Tentacles from Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a small oval at the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Squidward’s head.
Step 2: Inside the oval, draw a vertical line that splits the shape in half and extends down below the oval. The length of the line outside the oval should be a bit less than the height of the oval. This is a construction line that will help you draw Squidward’s features later on.
Step 3: Below the main oval, draw a shape similar to a square with the top part missing as a guide for the lower part of Squidward's head.
Step 4: Inside the shape of Squidward's head and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two small ovals next to each other as guides for his eyes. They should sit just below the main oval shape.
Step 5: Directly under this SpongeBob SquarePants character's eyes, draw another oval about the same size as one eye as a guide for Squidward's nose.
Step 6: Draw a short line under the nose as a guide for Squidward's neck. Also draw a long rectangle under that as a guide for the top half of his torso.
Step 7: Under the rectangle, draw a small half circle as a guide for the bottom part of Squidward's torso. Then draw two long lines under the half circle as guides for his legs. At the end of each leg, draw an oval as guides for this SpongeBob Squarepants character's feet.
Step 8: On either side of Squidward's torso, draw a line that begins at the top of the rectangle and ends near the bottom of the rectangle as guides for his arms. At the end of each line, draw a small circle as a guide for Squidward's hands.
Step 9: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Squidward Tentacles shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 10: Darken the shape of Squidward’s nose and draw it a bit longer. Unlike SpongeBob SquarePants, Squidward isn’t a very happy cartoon character, so give him a few lines above his eyes to represent a scowl.
Step 11: Give Squidward lower eyelids to emphasize his angry face. Use the bottom part of the main oval as a guide for the placement of the eyelids. Draw this SpongeBob SquarePants character's square pupils too.
Step 12: Use the main shapes as guides to draw the rest of Squidward's head. Have the lower part of his jaw come out to the side a bit and draw his frowned mouth that goes behind his nose.
Step 13: Thicken the guide under Squidward's nose to create his neck. Below his neck draw a series of small lines and arcs to create his shirt collar.
Step 14: On either side of Squidward's collar, draw a long arc similar to and upside-down letter U for his shirtsleeves. Then thicken the guide lines to create his arms. Use the small circles as guides to draw Squidward's fists.
Step 15: Use the remaining part of the rectangle to finish drawing Squidward's shirt. Darken the half circle under for the bottom part of his torso.
Step 16: Thicken the guides under Squidward's torso to create his legs. Use the ovals at the end of each leg to draw Squidward's feet. Make the feet a bit longer and have them come to a point on top.
Step 17: Squidward is an octopus, so draw an extra pair of legs behind the original pair. Use the first pair as a guide.
Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Squidward Tentacles from SpongeBob SquarePants. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Squidward Tentacles from SpongeBob SquarePants! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Squidward drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Squidward Tentacles drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils and even crayons! Color Squidward's skin a light blue, and add green spots on his head and blue spots on his feet. His pupils are red, and his shirt is a dark orange. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Squidward Tentacles from Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants.
