Intro: Start drawing Tony Stark's Iron Man helmet with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

 

Step 1: To draw Iron Man from Marvel Comics, start with a big oval in the middle of the page. Draw the oval so it is a little flat on the top. This will be the basic shape for Iron Man's head/helmet.

 

Step 2: Next, draw a vertical line that divides the oval in half. Draw a horizontal line that divides the oval in the middle but curve this line slightly upward. Draw another horizontal line near the top of the oval that curves down slightly. Draw yet another horizontal line near the bottom that curves upward. These will be construction lines that will help you place Iron Man's features later on.

Step 3: Now draw two long rectangles under the middle horizontal construction line on either side of the vertical construction line. These will be Iron Man's eyes. Below the top horizontal construction line, draw a square that comes down about halfway between the top and middle horizontal construction lines.

 

Step 4: That's it for the initial sketch of Tony Stark's Iron Man helmet! You have the basic Iron Man shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 5: Tighten the shape of Iron Man's eyes and make them slightly rounder. Draw a similar shape that surrounds the eyes to give them dimension. Draw two small lines to the outside corner of each eye to complete them.

Step 6: Darken the middle horizontal construction line and draw a parallel line on top of it. Connect these two lines to the top of Iron Man's helmet.

 

Step 7: Using the second horizontal construction line as a guide, draw a series of squares on top of Iron Man's head to give it shape. Draw two small circles below these shapes to indicate screws or bolts.

Step 8: Darken in the top part of the main oval. Darken in the square on top of his head but taper it in toward the bottom. Inside that shape, draw a curve near the middle and three angular lines below it that form a hexagon-type shape.

 

Step 9: Draw a dark thick line on the bottom horizontal construction line. On the edges of this line, draw two V shapes. This shape will make Iron Man's "mouth."

Step 10: From each of those V shapes, draw a line that goes up and ends at the top horizontal construction line. Draw these lines so they go out toward the edges of the main oval to form what could be Iron Man's cheekbones.

Step 11: Darken in the rest of the main oval shape, but draw it so it's more angular and less round at the bottom. On both sides of his head, slightly above the middle horizontal construction line, give him a curved line to make Iron Man's "ears" or the part of the helmet that swings up.

 

Step 12: Draw few lines to define Tony Stark's Iron Man helmet more. Start drawing at his "cheekbones" and come down across the points of his mouth and end by making a trapezoid shape at the bottom.

Step 13: Draw in the last bits of structure for the Iron Man helmet, which are a series of lines that follow the shape of his mouth. Connect them to his mouth by drawing two small lines.

 

Step 14: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of Marvel Comics' Iron Man. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

 

Step 15: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Tony Stark's Iron Man helmet! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Iron Man drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Iron Man drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color the outer shapes of Iron Man's helmet a dark red and the inside shapes yellow. Draw a light blue line inside the eyes (leave the insides white) to make it seem as if they are glowing. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Iron Man.
