The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a small circle near the top of the page as a guide for Thanos' head. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a coin, a lid or any other object with a circular edge. Under the head, draw a U-shaped arc as a guide for the jaw and chin. Thanos has a big jaw and chin, so make the U- shaped line dip low.
Step 2: Inside the head, draw two intersecting lines as guides to help you place Thanos' facial features later on. Under the head, draw two short lines as guides for the neck.
Step 3: Draw a big oval under the head as a guide for the chest. First make four small marks to indicate the oval's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Pay attention to the size of the chest in relation to Thanos' head. Don't make the oval too small.
Step 4: Draw two vertical lines under the chest, one on each side, as guides for Thanos' midsection. Connect the lines at the bottom using a horizontal line to complete the guide for the midsection.
Step 5: Under the midsection, draw two short lines on either side as a guide for Thanos' lower torso. Finish the guide by drawing a line similar to a wide letter V at the bottom.
Step 6: On the top, right side of the torso, draw a circle as a guide for Thanos' fist. This is the infinity gauntlet fist, so make this circle big. It should almost take up half of the chest.
Step 7: On the lower, right side of the fist, make a small mark to indicate the length of the forearm. Connect the mark to the fist using curved lines to create the shape of the forearm. Make the top part of the shape a bit thinner for Thanos' wrist. To the right, draw a couple of curved lines for the rest of the arm peeking from behind the forearm.
Step 8: To the left of the torso, draw a couple of curved lines for the visible part of Thanos' other shoulder and bicep.
Step 9: Below that, draw a small oval as a guide for the other forearm. Below the oval, draw a couple of short lines for the wrist and then a small circle for Thanos' other fist.
Step 10: Below the torso, on the right side, draw a big U-shaped line as a guide for the first leg. Below the curved line, draw a wide circle with the top missing as a guide for Thanos' knee.
Step 11: Under the knee, draw another small circle as a guide for the calf section of Thanos' leg. Below the calf, draw two vertical lines with a curved line at the bottom for the shin section of the leg. At the bottom, draw a blocky shape as a guide for the foot.
Step 12: On the left side, draw another U-shaped line with a circle underneath for Thanos' other leg and knee.
Step 13: Below that, draw another circle and lines as guides for the calf and shin sections of the leg. At the bottom, draw a guide for Thanos' foot. It should be a triangle- like shape with a flat tip that points to the left.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 14: Inside the head, lightly sketch a couple of small ovals for Thanos' eyes. Place the eyes above the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line. Don't make them too big. Above each oval, draw a short, diagonal line for the heavy brow over each eye. Curve the outer tips of the lines down and the inner tips up to furrow the brow.
Darken the shapes of Thanos' eyes but don't overlap the lines for the brow. Make the shapes of the eyes a bit blockier as you darken the lines. The top and bottom edges of the eyes curve downward a bit like rainbows. Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the irises. In the middle of each iris, draw a tiny dot for the pupils. Below each eye, draw a short line for the bags under the eyes.
Step 15: Between the eyes, draw a couple of small, curved lines for the bridge of the nose. At the bottom, right on the edge of the initial circle, draw a short line for the base of Thanos' nose. On either side of that line, draw a short, slit-like line for the nostrils. Add a line on either side of the nostrils to finish the shape. The nose should be pretty small.
Step 16: Under the nose, draw a long, horizontal line for the mouth. Thanos' mouth should be near the middle of the initial arc. There should be a big space between the nose and the mouth. Draw a shorter line under the mouth for the lower lip. Starting on the sides of the nose, draw two lines that curve toward the tips of the mouth for creases. These lines should be long, and they should bend a bit near the middle.
Step 17: On the left side of the head, draw a curved line for the first ear. Inside the ear, draw a few short, angled lines for the inner structure. On the right side of the head, draw Thanos' other ear the same way.
Step 18: Use the remaining shapes as guides to draw the rest of the head. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of Thanos' head. Make the sides of the head a bit narrower than the initial circle as you darken the lines. Leave an open gap near the ears to indicate the ears connected to the head. At the bottom, make the lines more angular to define the jaw and chin.
Step 19: Add a few lines within the head for extra detail. Draw a series of diagonal lines on the sides of the eyes for the scar-like marks. Add a series of vertical lines on the chin for the creases found there. Don't make these lines too straight. Curve them and disconnect them a bit. The lines on Thanos' head seem to be scars even though they're very symmetrical. The lines on the chin seem to be naturally occurring.
Step 20: Use the shapes on the right side of the torso as guides to draw Thanos' infinity gauntlet. Draw a curved line near the elbow for the gauntlet's opening. Darken the sides of the shape. At the top, darken the circle but make the sides flatter for the metallic fist. Make the top edge blockier for the folded fingers pointed away from the viewer. On the right side of the fist, draw a curved line over the folded thumb for the first infinity stone: the time stone.
Step 21: In the middle of the back of the fist, draw a big oval-like shape for the mind stone. At the top of the fist, starting at the left, draw four smaller circular shapes for the soul, reality, space and power stones. Draw an angular shape around each stone for the base on the infinity gauntlet. Space out the stones so that they're close to each other but not overlapping. Darken the guides to the right of the infinity gauntlet for the visible part of the rest of Thanos' arm.
Step 22: Add a few angled lines within Thanos' infinity gauntlet for extra detail on the metal. You don't have to draw every single line on found on the real gauntlet. Just draw a few lines to indicate the detail. It's basically some angled lines on the wrist and forearm , and a curved line near the bottom.
Step 23: Draw a series of short lines around the neck for the shirt's collar. Draw a couple of long, vertical lines below Thanos' neck and across his chest for the shirt's opening. Add a few lines inside the neck for the muscle structure. Draw the part of the shirt behind the infinity gauntlet.
Step 24: Use the shapes in the middle as guides to create the torso. Darken the outer edges of the initial shapes all the way down to the leg because the back of the shirt is long. On the right side, near the bottom, draw an angled line for a design element on Thanos' shirt. Add a couple of angled, horizontal lines across the bottom of the torso for the belt.
Step 25: Draw a series of lines inside the torso for more design elements on Thanos' shirt. Add a few curved lines around the opening of the shirt at the top. Add a couple more curved lines across the chest but then angle them down to meet the belt.
Step 26: Darken the outer edges of the shapes on the left to create Thanos' other arm. Make the lines a bit more angular and add a few lines within the shape for muscle definition.
Step 27: Use the circle at the bottom as a guide to draw Thanos' fist. Follow the path of the circle but make the fist blockier. Use short, curved lines for the folded thumb on the right. Draw a few lines at the bottom for the folded fingers. Add a curved line below the thumb for the index finger.
Step 28: Darken the sides of the U-shaped guide on the right for the top of the first leg. Draw a few short lines under the belt for the detail on Thanos' pants. Below that, draw a hexagonal shape inside the initial circle for the knee protector. Draw a few angled lines inside the shape for the detail on the knee protector.
Step 29: Use the shapes under the knee as guides to draw Thanos' big boot. Draw a line similar to the letter V below the knee for the design on the boot. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the overall shape of the boot. Add a few lines within the shape for extra detail on the boot.
Step 30: Use the shapes on the left as guides to draw the other leg and knee protector the same way. This knee protector is facing left, so angle the shape outward and add the detail inside.
Step 31: Darken the outer edges of the shapes under the knee to create the top of Thanos' other boot. Draw an angled line under the knee for the design element inside the boot. Darken the rest of the initial guide and add a heel to the boot. Add a series of lines inside the shape for the design elements.
Step 32: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking Thanos, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your Thanos drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use violet or purple for the skin. His skin can range from pink to purple , depending on the light. Add some blue to create shadows. Use dark blue for the main part of the shirt. Color lightly at first and gradually build up to the level of darkness you like.
Use yellow-orange for the gold trim on the shirt and the gauntlet. Add a bit of light brown to the trim on Thanos' shirt and infinity gauntlet. Use dark brown for the pants and brown for the boots. Remember to start off coloring lightly and slowly build up the color. Use a bit of dark brown to create shadows on the infinity gauntlet and shirt.
Starting on the left, use orange for the soul stone, red for the reality stone, blue for the space stone and purple for the power stone. Use green for the time stone on the right and yellow for the mind stone in the middle.
