The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a small circle at the top of the page as a guide for Elsa's head. First draw some marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Don't worry if the circle isn't perfect. It's just a guide. If you would still like a perfect circle, you can just trace the edge of a coin or anything circular.
Step 2: Draw a small arc under the head as a guide for the jaw and chin. Don't draw the arc too low, or Elsa will end up with a big chin.
Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head, one horizontal and one vertical. Curve the lines to contour to the head. These construction lines will help you place Elsa's facial features later. Add two short lines under the head for the neck.
Step 4: Draw a big triangle under the head as a guide for the top part of Elsa's torso. The top part of the triangle will be the guide for the shoulders, so don't draw this part too wide. The length of this triangle should be about twice the size of the head.
Step 5: Draw a set of lines under the triangle as a guide for the bottom of Elsa's torso. This shape is made up of two vertical lines on the sides, with another sloping line at the bottom.
Step 6: Draw an angled line on the top, left side of the torso as a guide for Elsa's arm. At the bottom end of the line , draw a small circle as guide for the hand. Draw another angled line and small circle on the top, right side as a guide for Elsa's other arm.
Step 7: Draw two long lines under the torso as guides for Elsa's legs. The length of these lines should be longer than the torso and the head combined. The line on the right should slope more and be angled at the bottom to create guide for the foot.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more finished drawing.
Step 8: Draw Elsa's eyes inside the head. Use the construction lines as guides. First lightly sketch a football-like shape right on top of the horizontal line and on either side of the vertical line. When you get the shapes and their positions right, darken the lines.
The eye on the left should be a bit flatter, while the one on the right should be wide and fully opened. Draw a thicker line on the top part of each eye for Elsa's eyelashes. Add a few smaller strokes along the top part of the line to emphasize the eyelashes. Make the bottom line of the eyes thicker too, but not as thick as the top line. Add the eyelashes to the eye on the right as well. Draw a couple of small, curved lines over each eye for Elsa's eyelids.
Step 9: Inside each eye, draw two small, curved lines for the irises. The irises should be circles, but because Elsa's eyes are half-closed, only a couple of lines are necessary. Add a big dot in the middle of each iris for the pupils. Elsa has big pupils, so don't draw these shapes too small.
Step 10: Draw a thin, long shape over each eye for the eyebrows. Place the eyebrow on the left side close to the eye. The eyebrow on the right should be higher above the eye to give Elsa a playful look.
Step 11: Draw Elsa's nose above the bottom edge of the main circle. First draw two tiny lines for the sides of the nose. Then add the nostrils in between using a V-shaped line.
Step 12: Draw the top lip as a thin, long shape under Elsa's nose and outside of the lower edge of the main circle. The ends of the lips should be pointy. The left tip should curve up a bit more than the right tip.
Step 13: Draw a curved line under the top lip for the bottom lip. Add a little line on the left for Elsa's smile line.
Step 14: Draw the top, right portion of Elsa's hair using a series of curved lines. The first line should start at the vertical construction line and curve high over the head. Draw another curved line under that one for the second clump of hair. Draw a small clump of hair that curves down toward the eyebrow on the right using two short, curved lines. Add a longer, curved line on the right for another section of the hair. Now draw the line for the side of the hair. Use the initial lines and shapes as guides as you draw Elsa's hair.
Step 15: Now draw the top, left side of Elsa's hair by first drawing a curved line high above the head. Now draw the hairline using curved lines that extend toward the edge of the main circle. Add the side of the hair and follow the basic curved path of the initial circle. Use curved lines for the individual clumps and sections of Elsa's hair.
Step 16: Draw the top part of Elsa's braid as a line that's similar to a letter V with long, curved sides. Extend the bottom part of the V-shaped line so it looks like a Y. Draw a line similar to a backward letter S on the lower right side. Add a C- shaped line on the left side.
Step 17: Draw the bottom part of Elsa's braid like the top; use a series of curved lines. The curved lines should overlap each other, and the whole braid should curve toward the middle of the torso. The braid is a bit tricky, so use the image above as reference. Sketch the lines lightly at first. When you get the placement and shapes right, darken them.
Step 18: Use the initial lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of Elsa's head. Follow the basic outer edge of the initial guides as you darken the lines to create the shape of the face. Draw a curved line on either side of the head for the ears. The ears should be under the clumps of hair. Draw the neck and shoulders too by following the guides and using curved lines. Add a curved line on the bottom left side of the head for the back side of the hair.
Step 19: Use the small circle on the top right side as guide to draw Elsa's hand. Draw the thumb as a thin arc on the top, right side of the circle. Draw the rest of the fingers as thin, long arcs on the right side of the circle. This is a side view of the hand, and the fingers will be behind each other, so only draw the visible portions. Sketch the shapes of the fingers lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the structure right.
Step 20: Use the angled line as a guide to draw the arm. Follow the basic path of the line as you make the shape of the arm thicker. The arm should be thinner at the wrist. Connect the line for the shoulder to the line for the arm.
Step 21: Draw a snowflake above Elsa's hand. This step is sped up because it's optional and isn't part of Elsa. Draw a hexagon, then complete the design using spikes and other shapes on it and around it.
Step 22: Use the initial triangle as a guide to draw the top part of Elsa's torso. Follow the basic path of the triangle but make the overall shape curvier as you darken the lines. Darken the left side of the torso using a curved line that follows the shape of the triangle. The middle part of the dress consists of a line that's similar to the letter V placed low on her waist. The top part of the dress is made up of another curvy line. Make sure this top line doesn't overlap the braid.
Step 23: Use the angled line on the left side as a guide to draw Elsa's other arm. Follow the path of the guide as you make the shape of the arm thicker. Sketch the shape of the arm lightly at first and darken the lines only when you get the structure right. The dress' sleeve should be pointy and similar to the letter V. Draw the hand using the initial circle as a guide. The fingers are folded, so just draw the visible pinky.
Step 24: Draw two long, vertical lines on either side of the lower part of the body for the sides of Elsa's dress. Use the initial lines for the legs as guides to draw these lines. Pay attention to the distance between them. The bottom ends of these lines should curve out just a little bit.
Step 25: Draw two shorter lines on the left side for the dress' slit. The slit of the dress should go up to about the middle of the initial guide for the left leg. The top of this slit should come to a point and the bottom part should be wider. Now draw the rest of the bottom of Elsa's dress using couple of curved lines.
Step 26: Use the initial line on the left side as a guide to draw the bottom part of the leg. Use a wavy line to indicate the knee at the top, the wider calf muscle, the skinnier ankle and the pointy foot. Sketch the shape of Elsa's leg lightly as you follow the guide and only darken the lines when you get the structure right.
Use the image above as reference as you draw Elsa's leg. The tips of the shoes should have a snowflake- like design that consists of three small spikes. Draw the visible portion of the foot on the right using the line as a guide. This foot is facing out, so the tip of Elsa's shoe should point to the right. Add the heel using a spike-like shape on the left and add the shoe's snowflake-like design at the front.
Step 27: Now draw the rest of Elsa's dress. First draw the top part using a curved line. Make sure the line doesn't overlap the braid. Draw two long lines on the left side of the body for the cape. The two long lines should start on the left side of the torso and come together at the bottom to form the folded cape. You can make these lines longer and draw it facing out to the sides more to create a bigger cape. Draw a single line on the right side and a couple of shorter lines at the bottom for the bottom of the dress and cape.
Step 28: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.
Step 29: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your Elsa drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! First use a bit of light brown on the hair. Then lightly add some yellow on top of that. The eyebrows are brown, and the eyelids and lips are dark red. Use a bit of light brown on the skin to create some shadows. Use peach on top of the light brown and all over the exposed skin. Use peach on top of the light brown and all over the exposed skin.
Lightly add some blue-green as the base color of the dress and light blue to create some shadows. Use dark blue and purple to create deeper shadows. Add more blue-green and press down harder to blend in the other colors. Use light blue for the rest of the dress, cape and shoes. Add some pink to Elsa's cheek and light blue to her eyes and around the snowflake.
