The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a circle on the lower left side as a guide for the Cheshire Cat's head. First draw some marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch it out lightly at first, then darken the lines when you get it right. Don't worry if the circle isn't perfect. It's just a guide. If you would still like a perfect circle, you can just trace the rim of a glass or anything circular.
Step 2: Inside the circle, draw two intersecting lines, one horizontal and one vertical. Curve the horizontal line up a bit. These are construction lines that will help you place the Cheshire Cat's facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw two small ovals inside the head right on top of the horizontal line as a guide for the eyes. The eyes should go on either side of the vertical construction line. The eyes should be very close to each other, grazing the vertical line in the middle.
Step 4: Draw another circle to the right of the head as a guide for the back part of the Cheshire Cat's body. This circle should be slightly bigger than the circle for the head. This circle should be placed a bit lower than the head. Their edges should touch.
Step 5: Draw a couple of curved lines that connnect the two circles to complete the guide for the Cheshire Cat's body. The line at the bottom should be longer and should curve from the left of the head to the bottom of the body. Draw another long, curved line on the top left side as a guide for the tail.
Step 6: Draw a small circle on the lower left side of the head as a guide for the Cheshire Cat's hand on the left. Add a small V- shaped line under it as a guide for the arm. Add a half-circle and angled line under the head on the right for the other arm.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more finished drawing.
Step 7: Darken the initial ovals inside the head to create the shape of the Cheshire Cat's eyes. Add a big dot inside each eye for the pupils. The pupils should be close to the inside edge of the eyes.
Step 8: Above each eye, draw a thick, curved shape for the Cheshire Cat's eyebrows. The eyebrows shouldn't be too high above the eyes. Shade in the inside of the eyebrows to make them darker.
Step 9: Draw the nose under the horizontal construction line, between the eyes. The shape of the nose is similar to an upside- down triangle with rounded corners. Add a couple of slit- like marks at the bottom for the Cheshire Cat's nostrils.
Step 10: Under the nose, draw the shape of the Cheshire Cat's mouth as two curved lines. The ends of the lines should almost touch the horizontal construction line. Follow the curvature of the main circle as you draw the line at the bottom. The end result should look similar to a crescent moon on its side.
Step 11: Inside the mouth, draw a series of small lines for the Cheshire Cat's teeth. About 10 small, vertical lines make the teeth look evenly spaced.
Step 12: Add a few short lines between the nose and mouth for the Cheshire Cat's whiskers. Add a small dot between each whisker for extra detail. Draw another curved line under the mouth for the bottom lip.
Step 13: Draw a series of short, curved lines above the eyebrows for the Cheshire Cat's hair. The hair should split in the middle, and the lines should go in opposite directions. The top of the hair shouldn't reach the top edge of the main circle.
Step 14: Now draw two angled lines above the hair for the ears. The Cheshire Cat's ears are similar to an upside-down letter V. Add an extra line inside each ear.
Step 15: Draw the Cheshire Cat's muzzle by using the lower half of the main circle as a guide. The top part of the muzzle curves under the eyes and on top of the horizontal construction line. Use the lower half of the main circle as a guide to draw the bottom part of the muzzle. Follow the basic path of the main circle but make the muzzle wider as you darken the line.
Step 16: Now draw the top part of the Cheshire Cat's head using a series of curved lines. The line for the head comes out from the eyebrow and ends on top of the muzzle. Use short, curved lines for the fur above the sides of the muzzle.
Step 17: Draw the Cheshire Cat's hand within the half-circle under the head using a few curved lines. Use little U-shaped lines for the fingers and add the claws at the tips. Follow the angle of the initial guide line as you make the arm thicker.
Step 18: Draw the Cheshire Cat's other hand using the initial circle as a guide. Use small, U-shaped lines for the fingers inside the circle, and then add the claws. Follow the path of the initial line as you create the thicker shape of the arm. Sketch the shape of the arm lightly at first, then darken it when you get it right.
Step 19: Use the initial circle and lines as guides to draw the rest of the Cheshire Cat's body. Darken the outer portion of the guides to create the shape of the body. Add an extra curved line on the lower right side for the leg. Draw the foot to the right of the leg using short , curved lines for the toes.
Step 20: Use the initial curved line as a guide to draw the Cheshire Cat's tail. Use wavy lines as you follow the path of the guide to create the shape of the tail. Make the tip of the tail thicker than the base.
Step 21: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.
Step 22: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your Cheshire Cat drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Using purple, draw a series of curved lines on the body and tail for the stripes. Color every other stripe on the body purple. Color the remaining stripes pink. Color the top of the Cheshire Cat's head purple, as well. The muzzle, the paws and the tip of the tail are light pink. The nose is dark pink, and the eyes are yellow.
