How to Draw Joy (Inside Out)
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Joy from Disney•Pixar's Inside Out. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a small circle near the top of the page as a guide for Joy's head. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave enough room at the bottom for the rest of Joy's body.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape of the circle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Joy's facial features later on. Add two tiny lines under the head as guides for the short neck.
Step 3: Draw two small ovals as guides for Joy's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The oval on the left should be thinner because of perspective.
Step 4: Below the head, draw a shape similar to a square as a guide for the to part of Joy's body. The top side of the square should be longer than the bottom. The line for the left side of the square should have more of a diagonal orientation than the right side.
Step 5: Add three long lines under the square as a guide for the bottom part of Joy's dress. The lines on the sides should be longer than the line at the bottom. The final shape should be similar to a trapezoid.
Step 6: On either side of top part of the body, draw an angled line as a guides for Joy's arms. The line on the left should angle in toward the body, and the line on the right should bend up toward the head. At the end of each line, draw small circle as a guide for Joy's hands. On top of the circle on the right, draw five small lines as guides for the fingers.
Step 7: Under the trapezoid shape, draw two long lines as guides for Joy's legs. The ends of the lines should angle a bit to indicate where the feet will be.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Joy from Inside Out. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Draw the front part of Joy's hair using the top part of the original circle as a guide. First draw a series of angled lines across the forehead that look like curved spikes. The spike on the right should be the longest and should cover a tiny part of the eye on the right. Add the top part of Joy's hair by following the basic path of the original circle and darkening the line.
Step 10: Darken the initial ovals inside the head using thick lines to create the shape of Joy's eyes. Make the bottom part of the eyes a bit flatter. Add a short line above the eye on the left for the eyebrow. The eyebrow on the right is hidden behind the hair.
Step 11: Inside each eye, draw a circle for the irises. Inside each iris, draw a tiny circle off to the side to represent glare. In the middle of each iris, draw another circle and shade it in for Joy's pupils.
Step 12: Draw Joy's nose right where the two construction lines intersect. The nose consists of a curved line for the tip of the nose and a smaller curved line under for the base. Add a tiny line on the sides of it for structure.
Step 13: Under the nose, draw a couple of lines for Joy's top lip. Under the top lip, draw a curved line for the open mouth. The end result should look something similar to the letter D on its side.
Step 14: Draw another line inside the mouth on the top side for the row of teeth. Draw a curved line at the bottom for Joy's tongue. Outside of the mouth, on the bottom, draw another curved line for the bottom lip.
Step 15: Use a series of short, angled lines on the top left side of the head for the spiky part of Joy's hair. Follow the basic path of the initial circle as you create the spikes.
Step 16: Now draw the lower left side of Joy's hair using the initial circle as a guide. Draw a few angled lines that are closer to the eye for the inside section of the hair.
Step 17: Darken the lower right edge of the initial circle to create Joy's face. Use the initial lines as guides to create the neck and top part of the shoulders.
Step 18: Use the line on the left side of the body as a guide to draw Joy's arm. Follow the basic path of the line as you draw the arm and make it thicker. Use the circle at the bottom as a guide to draw the folded fingers on the hip. Use a series of curved lines to create Joy's fingers.
Step 19: Draw the top part of Joy's dress using the initial square-like shape as a guide. Follow the basic path of the shape as you darken the lines. At the top of the shape, draw a curved line for the top opening of the dress.
Step 20: Use the line on the right side of the body as a guide to draw the arm on the right. Follow the basic path of the line as you draw Joy's arm and make it thicker. Use the circle at the top as a guide to draw the hand and the lines to draw the fingers.
Step 21: Darken the bottom trapezoid-like shape to create the bottom part of Joy's dress. Make the bottom part curvier and draw a few long lines to indicate the folds on the cloth of the dress.
Step 22: Use the lines at the bottom as guides to draw Joy's legs. Follow the basic path of the guides, but make the legs thicker as you darken the lines. Draw the feet at the bottom.
Step 23: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of the Joy from Inside Out. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 24: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Joy! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Joy drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Joy drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Joy's hair and eyes are blue. Use blue to draw some star-like shapes on the dress using a series of lines. Her skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Her lips and tongue are pink, and the inside of her mouth is brown. Her dress is yellow-green. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Joy from Disney•Pixar's Inside Out.
