Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Woody from Disney•Pixar's Toy Story. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start with a circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for the top part Woody's head.
Step 2: Draw a small U-shaped arc under the head as a guide for Woody's jaw and chin. The left side of the arc should bulge out a bit more than the right. These combined two shapes make the guide for the head.
Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines little so that they contour to the shape of the head. These will be construction lines that will help you place Woody's facial features later on.
Step 4: Draw two small circles as guides for Woody's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The circles should be closer to the left side of the head.
Step 5: On the right side of Woody's head, draw a curved line as a guide for the ear. Under the head, draw two small lines as guides for the neck.
Step 6: Draw a long line on top of Woody's head as a guide for the brim of the hat. The line should be slightly tilted with a diagonal orientation.
Step 7: Draw a curved line under each side of the long diagonal line to complete the guide for the hat's brim. Draw a bigger curved line on top of the diagonal line for the top pat of Woody's hat.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Woody from Toy Story. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Darken the circles inside the head to create the shape of Woody's eyes. Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the irises. Inside each iris, in the middle, draw a big dot for the pupils and a tiny circle off to the side to represent glare.
Step 10: Above each eye, draw a thin, long shape for the eyebrows. The shapes should curve and end in points. The eyebrow on the right should be higher than the one on the left to give Woody a more playful look.
Step 11: Draw the bridge of Woody's nose as a long line that extends from the eyebrow on the left all the way down toward the outside bottom edge of the main circle.
Step 12: Add the bottom part of Woody's nose as two short curved lines outside of the bottom edge of the main circle.
Step 13: Under the nose, draw two curved lines for the shape of the mouth. The shape of the mouth is similar to the letter D on its side.
Step 14: Inside Woody's mouth, draw two lines for the top and bottom row of teeth. Add a curved line outside of the mouth at the bottom for the lower lip. Draw another curved line outside of the mouth on the top right for the smile line.
Step 15: Use the C-shaped line on the right as a guide to draw Woody's ear. Darken the outer shape and add a few curved lines within the shape for the inner structure.
Step 16: Use the initial circle and U-shaped lines as guides to draw Woody's face. Follow the basic path of the guides as you darken the lines but make the shape a bit wavier.
Step 17: Draw another long diagonal line above Woody's eyebrows for the hat's opening. Draw a series of tiny curved lines along the initial diagonal line for the design on the hat's brim. Don't overthink it, just add S-shaped lines along the path of the diagonal line.
Step 18: Under the hat's opening, draw a few curved lines to indicate the hair. The line to the left of the ear should curve up to form Woody's sideburn.
Step 19: Darken the initial lines to create the shape of Woody's hat. Simply follow the path of the guides and darken the lines. Don't overlap the small S-shaped line on the brim of the hat.
Step 20: Darken the lines under the head to create Woody's neck. Draw a curved line for the handkerchief and another V-shaped line for the shirt's opening.
Step 21: Add a small circle on the right side of the neck for the handkerchief's knot and a few wavy lines for its ends. On the bottom of the neck, draw a couple of angled lines for Woody's shirt collar.
Step 22: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Woody from Toy Story. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Woody! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Woody drawing in its entirety.
Final Step: For a completely finished Woody drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color the hat and his eyes light brown. The hair, eyebrows and inside of his mouth are dark brown. His skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Add a bit of pink to his cheeks. Woody's handkerchief is red, but leave some spots white. The shirt is yellow with some red checkered lines on top of it.Woody's hair and eyebrows orange. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Woody from Disney•Pixar's Toy Story.
