How to Draw Ness (EarthBound)
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Ness from the Earthbound and Super Smash Brothers video games. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start with a circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Ness's head. Leave enough room at the bottom for his body.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. The end result should be similar to crosshairs on a scope. These will be construction lines that will help you place Ness's facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw a square under Ness's head as a guide for the top part of the body. The square should be a bit smaller than the circle.
Step 4: Add an angled line under the square as a guide for Ness's shorts. First draw the two lines on the sides coming out of the bottom corners of the square. Then draw the lines that come in toward the middle. Before those two lines meet, draw a tiny upside-down V shape.
Step 5: Draw a line on the left side of the body with a small circle at the end. On top of the circle, draw two smaller lines. This will be a guide for Ness's arm and hand with the peace sign. Draw another small angled line and circle on the right side as a guide for Ness's other arm.
Step 6: Under the body, draw two more shapes as guides for Ness's legs and feet. Two short lines make up the guides for the legs. Draw a circle as a guide for the foot on the left and an oval for the right.
Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Ness shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Draw two ellipses and shade them in for Ness's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction.
Step 9: Right under the area where the construction lines intersect, draw a tiny curved line for Ness's nose. Under the nose, draw a bigger curved line for the smile.
Step 10: Ness's cap is a bit tricky, so its divided into two parts. First draw the bill of the cap on the upper left side of the head. The shape is similar to a sort of flat diamond. Under the diamond, on the left side, draw a smaller line for the other side of the bill.
Step 11: Now draw the main part of the cap. First draw the bottom part of the cap by drawing a line that goes across the top of Ness's head. Then draw the top part of the cap as a long curved line way above the head. Finish off the cap by adding two curved lines inside and a small curved line on top.
Step 12: Add Ness's hair coming out of the hat. Draw three small curved lines in the section above the eyes in the middle. Then draw a V-shaped line on either side of the head for the hair on the sides.
Step 13: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of Ness's head. Darken the lines for the face and add two small curved lines on either side of the head for the ears.
Step 14: Draw the hand showing the peace symbol by using the initial shapes as guides. Follow the basic path of the circle to draw the bottom part of Ness's hand. Add the thumb inside as a couple of curved lines. Draw the two extended fingers using the smaller lines as guides. Then add the folded fingers on the side.
Step 15: Use the line as a guide to draw the rest of the arm on the left. Follow the path of the guide as you make the arm thicker. At the bottom, draw Ness's shirt's sleeve by using an oval and a couple of curved lines.
Step 16: Draw Ness's backpack straps coming over the corners of the initial square. The straps are basically two sets of curved parallel lines. Near the middle of each set of lines, draw a small square within another small square for the strap's buckles.
Step 17: Use the rest of the square as a guide to draw Ness's shirt. Follow the basic path of the square but make the line wavier to create the loose-fitting shirt. On the left side of the body, draw a couple of curved lines for Ness's actual backpack.
Step 18: Use the line and circle on the right side as a guide to draw Ness's other hand. First draw the sleeve by using a couple of curved lines. Then follow the path of the line as you make the arm thicker. Most of the folded hand is hidden behind the body, but draw the visible portion by using the initial circle as a guide.
Step 19: Draw Ness's shorts under the shirt by using the angled line as a guide. Follow the basic shape of the line but make the corners rounder as you draw them. Add a few lines within the shape for the detail on the denim shorts.
Step 20: Use the line and circle on the left as a guide to draw Ness's leg and foot. Thicken up the foot as you follow the path of the guide and add another line in the middle for the sock. Now use the circle to create the shoe. Draw a couple of curved lines at the top for the laces and a couple more within the shoe for extra detail.
Step 21: Draw Ness's other foot and leg the same way, except this one is sideways. Follow the line to create the top part of the leg and sock. Then use the oval as a guide to create the shoe. Add the laces at the top and the detail underneath.
Step 22: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Ness. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Ness! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Ness drawing in its entirety.
Final Step: For a completely finished Ness drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! The main part of the cap is red along with the shoes. The bill of the cap and the shorts are blue. The shirt has blue and yellow stripes. Just alternate between three blue bars and three yellow bars on the front part of the shirt, and two blue bars and two yellow bars for the sleeves. Color his skin peach. If you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. His hair is black, and his backpack is brown. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Ness form the Earthbound and Super Smash Brothers video games.
