How to Draw Jack Frost (Rise of the Guardians)
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle near the top of the page. This will be the basic shape for the top part of Jack Frost's head. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.
Step 2: Draw a curved line under the circle as a guide for Jack Frost's chin and jaw. The line should be curved on the lower right side for the chin and have a slight angle on the left for the jaw. These shapes form the guide for Jack Frost's head.
Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Jack Frost's facial features later on.
Step 4: Draw two small shapes similar to little footballs as guides for Jack Frost's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line.
Step 5: On the left side of the head, draw a curved line similar to a letter C as a guide for Jack Frost's ear. The top of the ear should be a little higher than the horizontal construction line.
Step 6: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Jack Frost from Dreamworks' Rise of the Guardians. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 7: Darken the shapes of Jack Frost's eyes. Make the lines thicker at the top and bottom to represent the eyelashes. Add a line over each eye for the eyelids. Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the pupils.
Step 8: Draw a small circle inside each eye for the irises. In the middle of each iris, draw a big dot for the pupils. On the side of each pupil, add a tiny circle to represent glare in Jack Frost's eyes.
Step 9: Above each eye, draw a long narrow shape for Jack Frost's eyebrows. Use a series of short, curved lines instead of a single straight line to form the long shape of each eyebrow to represent the texture.
Step 10: Draw Jack Frost's nose between the eyes and use the construction lines as guides for the nose's placement. The bridge of the nose should be in between the vertical construction line and the eye on the right. The bottom of the nose should end on the lower edge of the main circle. To the left of the nose, draw a couple of smaller lines for Jack Frost's nostril.
Step 11: Under the nose and on the outer edge of the original circle, draw a small thin shape for the upper lip. Under that shape draw a curved line for open mouth.
Step 12: Inside the shape of the mouth, draw a line for the row of teeth. Under the shape of the mouth draw another curved line for the lower lip.
Step 13: Use the initial shapes as guides to draw the side of the face. Make the side of the face on the right side closer to the eye. Use a wavy line to create the cheekbone than follow the basic path of the guides as you darken the line and create the chin and jaw.
Step 14: Draw the ear by using the C-shaped line as a guide. Add a few small lines within the shape of the ear to represent the ear's structure. Under the head, draw a few lines for the neck.
Step 15: The hair can be tricky so it's divided into four parts. First draw the front part of the hair on the left side. Start on the left side of vertical construction line and continue drawing a series of curved lines that move down over the eyebrow all the way down to the ear. The section of hair to the right of the ear is similar to the letter V.
Step 16: Jack has very messy hair so the front part of the hair on the right side should be made up of lines going in different directions. The short lines move across the top of the eyebrow toward the edge of the main circle. Use different sized lines to indicate the choppiness of the hair.
Step 17: Now draw the top part of the hair. Follow the basic path of the main circle as you draw the left side of the hair using a a series of curved lines. When you get to the very top of the hair, use a few spikes to give Jack a kind of bedhead look.
Step 18: Continue drawing a couple more spikes at the top and finish the right side of the head by using the right edge of the main circle as a guide. Draw a few more curved lines of different sizes within the shape of the head to give the hair more texture and volume. Don't draw every individual hair strand just a few lines for detail.
Step 19: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Jack Frost. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 20: For a more finished, inked look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Jack Frost! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Jack Frost drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Jack Frost drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color his eye gray. Vary the pressure on your crayon or colored pencil to get different shades of gray. Color his skin peach. If you don't have peach improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. If you'd like you can add a some light brown around the eyes and lips for a bit of shading. The eyebrows are brown and his eyes are blue. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Jack Frost from the DreamWorks' Rise of the Guardians.
