How to Draw Bender
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Bender the robot from Futurama. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a medium-sized circle near the middle of the page. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for the top part of Bender’s head.
Step 2: Directly underneath the first circle, draw another circle of the same size for the bottom part of Bender’s head.
Step 3: Draw a series of lines that envelop the lower circle to form a cylinder. Draw two straight, parallel lines on the sides and one curved line at the bottom.
Step 4: Draw a long vertical line in the middle that sticks out of the top part. The length that sticks out is about half the length of one of the circles. This is a construction line that will help you place Bender's robot facial features.
Step 5: Draw a small circle where the two main circles meet with the vertical line. Then draw another half circle to the right of the circle you just drew. These are guides for Bender’s eyes.
Step 6: Below Bender's eyes and inside the bottom circle, draw a curved line similar to the letter U on its side as a guide for his robot mouth.
Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Bender shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Bender’s visor is a bit tricky, so it’s divided into two parts. First, draw a shape that surrounds his eyes. The shape is similar to a rectangle with rounded corners.
Step 9: Now create the second part of Bender's visor by drawing another similar shape surrounding the first. The base of the shape curves to fit the rounded shape of Bender's head. Use the image above for further reference.
Step 10: Darken the visible shapes of Bender's eyeballs. Inside each eyeball, draw a small square and shade it in for his pupils.
Step 11: Use the top part of the vertical construction line to draw the antenna on top of Bender's head. First draw a circle on top, draw the mid-section and finish with the base.
Step 12: Draw Bender's mouth using the sideways U shape as a guide. Darken the U and draw three vertical lines and two horizontal lines within the shape.
Step 13: Use the initial circles and lines as guides to draw the rest of Bender's head. Notice that the right side of his mouth sticks outward a bit.
Step 14: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Bender the robot from Futurama. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 15: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Bender! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Bender drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Bender drawing, you have to color it. Bender is made out of metal, so color him gray except for the inner part of his visor, which is black. If you’d like, you can add a bit of yellow to his eyes and mouth. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Bender the robot from Futurama.
