Intro: When you learn how to draw Darth Maul, start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: First learn how to draw Darth Maul's head shape. Start by drawing an circle near the top half of the page. This will be a guide for Darth Maul's head. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.
Step 2: Under the circle, draw an arc similar to the letter V as a guide that will help you learn how to draw Darth Maul's jaw and chin later on. Don't make the arc too pointy. Notice that the bottom part is rounded. Both of the shapes combined form the guide for Darth Maul's head.
Step 3: Next, draw a vertical line that splits Darth Maul's head shape in half. Draw two small lines in the space between the bottom of the main circle and the bottom of the arc. The top line should be smaller than the bottom line, and they should break up the space into about three equal parts.
Step 4: On either side of the vertical construction line, draw two small shapes as guides for drawing Darth Maul's eyes. The shape of the eyes are similar to footballs. Draw the eyes low inside the original circle, close to the edge.
Step 5: Learning how to draw Darth Maul's horn guides is a bit tricky, so it's divided into two steps. First draw the guides for the horns on the top front of this Star Wars Sith Lord's head. Draw the horn in the middle right on top of the vertical line, high up on the head. It should be similar to a diamond. Then draw the other two horns on either side of the middle horn. These two are shaped like triangles, and the tips should graze the edge of the main circle.
Step 6: Now draw the guides for Darth Maul's five remaining horns. The horn in the middle should be at the end of the vertical line at the top of this Star Wars character's head. Draw two slightly bigger triangle-like shapes on the top sides and two small horns on the sides where the main circle meets the arc shape.
Step 7: Draw a curved line under each horn on the sides as guides for drawing Darth Maul's ears.
Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Darth Maul, the evil Sith Lord Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Now go in and tighten your drawing. When learning how to draw Darth Maul from this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Darken the outer shape of Darth Maul's eyes. Inside each eye, draw a squiggly circle shape for the irises. Inside each iris, draw and shade in a smaller circle for the pupils. On the side of each pupil, draw an even tinier circle to represent glare.
Step 10: Now learn how to draw Darth Maul's horns. Simply follow the basic path of the initial horn shapes, but make the lines more jagged as you darken them. Don't draw this Star Wars character's horns using smooth lines because they're supposed to be tough. Draw them using sharp angles and draw a few lines inside them for extra detail.
Step 11: Now learn how to draw Darth Maul's nose. Draw it sitting on top of the smallest of the horizontal lines. The bottom part of the nose is similar in shape to the letter V. The top ends of the nose curve in a bit. The top of the nose should graze the bottom edge of the main circle.
Step 12: Now learn how to draw Darth Maul's mouth. Draw the Sith Lord's mouth sitting on top of the horizontal line below the nose. The shape of the mouth consists of two curved lines sitting on top of each other to form the open mouth. Under the mouth, draw another smaller curved line to represent this Star Wars character's bottom lip.
Step 13: Inside the mouth, draw a series of small lines to represent the teeth. Darth Maul has terrible teeth, so don't draw the teeth too perfectly. Use crooked lines to represent his bad teeth.
Step 14: Now learn how to draw Darth Maul's ears. Use the curved lines on the sides of his head as guides to draw them. Darken the lines for the ears and make the shapes a bit more angled. Draw a few lines within the evil Sith Lord's ears as detail of the ear structure.
Step 15: Darken the top part of the main circle and the lower arc to make up Darth Maul's head. Be careful not to draw over the horns that are on the sides of his head.
Step 16: Now learn how to draw Darth Maul's facial tattoos. They are a bit challenging to draw, so they've been divided into separate steps. Be patient and take your time as you draw them. First draw the shape around the Sith Lord's eyes. The two points near the middle should almost touch. The points on the bottom should almost touch the sides of the head shape. The top part of the shapes has two points. Use the bottom part of the main circle as a guide for placement.
Step 17: Draw a wavy line inside Darth Maul's nose. On either side of the nose, draw another line that dips down on the cheeks, and then comes up and meets the shape from the last step.
Step 18: In between Darth Maul's nose and the mouth, draw a line similar in shape to the nose. Then make two small hill-like shapes under the nose that then move up to the top of the head around the top horns. Under this Star Wars character's bottom lip, draw two lines that dip in near the middle.
Step 19: Draw a few curved lines that encircle Darth Maul's top three horns. The middle shape comes to a point while the two shapes on the sides have a curve on the bottom and a point at the top. Above each eye shape, draw a tiny shape that points in toward the vertical construction line.
Step 20: Now draw the vertical shapes in the middle of Darth Maul's face using the vertical construction line as a guide. The top line has a diamond, a tiny horizontal line and then two more diamonds. The shape below Darth Maul's lip is similar to a crescent moon and two triangle-like shapes on the sides.
Step 21: Draw the final shapes that connect the shape around Darth Maul's eyes to the shape around the top two horns. The shape basically consists of a zigzag line that gets thicker near the middle.
Step 22: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Darth Maul, the evil Sith Lord Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Darth Maul from Star Wars! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Maul drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Darth Maul drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! The main color of Darth Maul's skin is red, and his tattoos are black. His horns are light brown. His eyes are red and yellow. His teeth are yellow too, but add more black to them to make them look decayed. That’s it! You have now learned how to draw Darth Maul, the evil Sith Lord Darth Maul from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
