Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

 

Step 1: Start with a big oval with somewhat flat ends in the middle of the page. This will be the basic shape for the Stormtrooper’s head.

 

Step 2: Next, draw a vertical line in the center of the oval followed by two horizontal lines. One of the horizontal lines will curve up slightly and be near the top of the oval. The other will be closer to the bottom and will curve down quite a bit, like a hill. These will be construction lines that will help you place the Stormtrooper’s features later on.

Step 3: Now draw two angled curves right below the top horizontal construction line for the Stormtrooper's eyes. The end result looks like two right triangles. Draw a curve on top of the bottom horizontal line for the mouthpiece.

 

Step 4: Draw three ovals at the bottom of the main oval that will help as guides later on. The circle in the middle should be bigger and should be intersected in half by the vertical construction line. Draw the other two on either side, and make them smaller and wider than the middle circle.

Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Stormtrooper shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 6: Darken if the top part and use the top horizontal construction line as a guide to draw a band on the Stormtrooper's helmet.

 

Step 7: Tighten in the shapes of the Stormtrooper's eyes by making them more round and less angled. Draw a small curve in between the eyes to represent the structure of the helmet.

Step 8: Draw a curved line below each eye that almost meets the curve in between the eyes. To the side of this curve draw a series of tiny rectangles as detail for the helmet.

 

Step 9: Using the bottom horizontal construction line as a guide, draw the bottom portion of the Stormtrooper's helmet. Make the top part a bit wavy and widen the sides to outside of the main oval, then bring it back inside to meet the small circle at the bottom of the head.

Step 10: Darken in the mouthpiece and draw a series of vertical lines inside of it that will end up looking like small rectangles.

Step 11: Using the small bottom circle as a guide, draw a series of rounded-out rectangles that get shorter as they extend out to create the bottom piece of the Stormtrooper's helmet.

 

Step 12: Finish up the bottom part of the helmet by using the small circles on each side as guides to draw a line that goes around the middle piece and then meets up with itself. Inside the circles you just created, draw two more tiny circles. Draw two lines on top of each circle to connect with the line above it. These are the Stormtrooper’s lights.

Step 13: To draw the sides of the helmet, draw a line on each side that bulges out at the bottom. Give the helmet some detail by drawing a series of small lines that start near the mouthpiece and recede back.

 

Step 14: Draw in the earpieces with three lines on each side. The first line is long and resembles the line in step 13. The second line goes right on top of this one and is smaller. The third is smaller still and sits on top of the second line.

Step 15: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of a Star Wars Stormtrooper. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Step 16: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of a Stormtrooper! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Stormtrooper drawing.

Final Steps: For a completely finished Stormtrooper drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Stormtroopers are pretty easy to color because they are mostly white. Color the eyes black and make sure to leave a bit of white to represent glare. Color the headband on the helmet, the small earpieces, the gaps in the mouthpiece and the shape at the bottom of the head black as well. Color the shapes below the eye, the rectangles in the mouthpiece and the lights at the bottom of the helmet gray. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of a Stormtrooper from Star Wars.
