How to Draw Yoda
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Master Yoda, Jedi Knight, from Star Wars. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a wide circle on the middle of the page. It doesn’t need to be perfect; it’s only a guide for Master Yoda’s head.
Step 2: Inside the oval draw two intersecting lines, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines to follow the shape of the circle. Below the horizontal construction line, draw a smaller line. These will be construction lines that will help you place Yoda’s features later on.
Step 3: Draw two circles that sit on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line for Yoda’s eyes.
Step 4: Now draw a smaller circle between the eyes, still on top of the vertical horizontal line for Yoda’s nose. On either side of his head draw an angled line similar to a triangle for his ears. The bottom of the ear shape should be where the horizontal construction line is, and the top should be level to his eyes. Draw the left ear slightly lower than the right for a little asymmetry.
Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Yoda shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 6: Use the circles as guides to draw in Yoda’s eyes. Two slits in the middle make the upper and lower eyelids. Then draw a few lines on each of Yoda’s eyelids to represent wrinkles.
Step 7: Inside each eye draw a circle to represent Yoda’s iris, but since his eyes are half closed, draw only the visible portion. Draw another circle inside each eye and shade it in for his pupils and a final circle to represent glare.
Step 8: Darken in the right and bottom part of Yoda’s nose using the circle as a guide. Then draw a few curved lines on either side for his nostrils.
Step 9: Use the small horizontal construction line as a guide to draw Yoda’s mouth, which resembles a long and wide letter M. Draw a curve under it for Yoda’s lower lip and a few lines around it for his wrinkles.
Step 10: Below Yoda’s mouth, near the bottom of the main circle shape, draw a half circle for his chin. Draw a few more lines for wrinkles on the side of Yoda’s mouth and around his chin.
Step 11: Use the triangle-like shapes as guides to draw in Yoda’s big, pointy ears. Make sure to curve them more for a more organic, less rigid feel. Draw some curved lines within the shape to represent the inside structure of Yoda’s ears.
Step 12: Master Yoda has very little, wispy hair on the back of his head, so draw a few lines around the left ear to represent this.
Step 13: Use the main circle shape as a guide to draw the rest of Yoda’s head and neck. The top of Yoda’s head resembles a hill. Draw a slight curve to the right of his face for his cheek and a few lines underneath make up his neck.
Step 14: 900 hundred years old Yoda is, so be sure to draw some extra wrinkles throughout his face. Draw some wrinkles above his nose, above his eyes and on his forehead for extra detail.
Step 15: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Master Yoda. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the next step.
Step 16: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Yoda from Star Wars! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Yoda drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Yoda drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Yoda’s skin green, the inside of his ears and eyes a darker green and his hair gray. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Master Yoda, Jedi Knight, from Star Wars.
