How to Draw Squirtle
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Squirtle from Pokemon. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the top, right side of the page to leave room enough for the body. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Squirtle’s head.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines a bit so that they contour to the shape. The vertical line should be closer to the right side, and the horizontal line should be closer to the bottom. These will be construction lines that will help you place Squirtle's facial features later on.
Step 3: Now draw guides for Squirtle's eyes by drawing two shapes right on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line. The shapes are similar to half ovals. Draw a tall arc on top of the horizontal construction line and then close the bottom of the arc with a line.
Step 4: Under the eyes, draw a guide for Squirtle's mouth. The shape for the mouth is similar to a sideways letter D or a wide letter U with a line over it. Use the horizontal construction line and the bottom of the main circle to help you with placement.
Step 5: Draw an oval under Squirtle's head as a guide for the body. The oval should be a bit bigger than the original circle for the head. The oval should be slightly tilted, and the top should be missing because it's behind the head.
Step 6: Under Squirtle's head and on either side of the body, draw two shapes as guides for the arms. The shape on the left is similar to a stretched-out oval. The guide on the right is similar minus the top, more like a long U shape.
Step 7: Below the body, draw a couple of shapes as guides for Squirtle's feet. The shape of the feet are similar to upside-down letter Us with a line across the opening. The upper left side of the foot on the right is missing because it's behind the body.
Step 8: On the left side of the body, draw a long arc as a guide for Squirtle's tail. The line begins below the left arm and extends down to the left foot.
Step 9: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Squirtle shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 10: Darken the shape of Squirtle's eyes. Draw a small oval on the top part of each eye to represent glare. Below the glare draw a bigger oval and shade it in for the pupils. Above the eyes, draw a couple of small lines for extra detail.
Step 11: Use the shape on the bottom side of the main circle as a guide to draw Squirtle's mouth. Make the top sides pointier and give the top line a slight bend to form a beak. Above the mouth, draw two small slits for Squirtle's nostrils.
Step 12: Draw the rest of Squirtle's head using the main circle as a guide. Darken the shape of the circle. The right side of the head should come closer to the eye to create the cheek.
Step 13: Draw Squirtle's arm on the left side by using the initial shape as a guide. Darken the base of the shape and draw two triangle-like points at the end for the fingers.
Step 14: Use the shape on the bottom as a guide to draw the left foot. Darken the top part and again draw three triangle-like points at the bottom for Squirtle's toes.
Step 15: Draw the top part of Squirtle's shell by using the original oval as a guide. Draw a couple of wavy lines between the hand and foot to create the edge of the shell. Draw a line on the lower left side for the markings on the shell.
Step 16: Darken the rest of the initial oval shape to create the rest of Squirtle's shell. Draw a few lines inside the shape for the shell markings. First draw a curved line on top, below the head. Then draw a line that comes down the middle and splits off into two toward the feet. Finally draw a line in the middle that splits off into two near the left side. Draw the lines going toward the hand and foot.
Step 17: Use the shape on the top right side as a guide to draw Squirtle's other hand. Darken the base of the shape and draw the three points for the fingers.
Step 18: Draw Squirtle's foot on the bottom using the initial shape as a guide. This foot is facing out, so draw only two triangle-like points on the right side.
Step 19: Use the shape on the left side as a guide to draw Squirtle's tail. Darken the the shape, and draw a swirly line on the upper left side.
Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Squirtle from Pokemon. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the next step to go for a more finished look.
Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Squirtle! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Squirtle drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Squirtle drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Squirtle's skin blue-green. His eyes are dark brown. The inside of his mouth is pink. The top of Squirtle's shell is brown, and the bottom is yellow. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Squirtle from Pokemon.
