Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start with a circle on the top side of the paper. It doesn't need to be perfect. It's just a basic shape for Applejack's head. Leave enough room at the bottom for the body.
Step 2: Inside the circle, draw two intersecting lines, one horizontal and one vertical. The vertical line should be close to the right side of the circle, and the horizontal line should be close to the bottom. Bend the lines so they contour to the shape of the sphere. These are construction lines that will help you place Applejack's facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw two ovals as guides for Applejack's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line, on either side of the vertical construction line. The oval on the right side should be smaller because of the perspective.
Step 4: Below the head, draw a bigger oval with a diagonal orientation. This will be a guide for Applejack's torso. Pay attention to the size of this oval in relation to the first circle. Don't draw the oval too far down, otherwise the neck will be too long.
Step 5: Draw two curved lines that connect the head to the torso to create Applejack's neck. Draw an arc on the top left side of the head as a guide for the ear. The arc should be slightly pointed.
Step 6: On the top part of the torso, draw two lines as guides for Applejack's front feet. The top line should curve up toward the head. The bottom line should angle down. The angles of this line will determine where the joints will go later.
Step 7: Now draw two more lines at the bottom of the torso as guides for Applejack's hind legs. Be sure to angle the lines at the top. This will help you figure out the joints later on.
Step 8: Draw a long curved line on the bottom, left side of the torso as a guide for Applejack's long tail.
Step 9: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Applejack from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 10: Applejack's mane is tricky, so it's divided into a few parts. First draw the front part of the bangs as a series of curved lines on top of the head. The line for this shape starts at the ear, then moves to the left in a series of curved spikes, then goes over the eyes and ends at the ear again.
Step 11: On the lower right side of the circle and under the right eye, draw a small arc for Applejack's muzzle. Use the construction lines and the original circle as guides to help you with the placement. Under the muzzle, add a couple of curved lines to create the open mouth.
Step 12: Draw a tiny slit inside Applejack's muzzle for the nostril and a small line inside the mouth for the tongue. Add a bigger line underneath using the original circle as a guide to create the bottom part of the head. Darken the arc on top of the head and add a line within the shape to create the ear.
Step 13: Darken the edges of the initial ovals inside Applejack's head to create the shapes of the eyes. Add a few small curved lines on top of each eye for the eyelashes. Inside each eye, draw a small oval for the eyes' glare.
Step 14: Inside each of Applejack's eyes, draw a a bigger oval for the irises. Inside each iris, draw a smaller oval for the pupils. Shade in the pupils except for a tiny circle at the bottom to represent glare.
Step 15: Now draw the bottom portion of Applejack's mane. This shape should go right under the head and should overlap the neck and top part of the torso. The shape is similar to a circle with spiky edges to simulate hair. Use the image above for reference to get the shape right.
Step 16: Add the last part of Applejack's mane as a couple of lines that connect the shape in the previous step up toward the ear.
Step 17: Draw the first part of Applejack's hat as a curved line above the head. This will be the brim of the hat. Notice that the top part of the line bends down to create a semi-circular shape.
Step 18: Now add the top part of Applejack's hat as a curved line to the left of the shape created in the previous step. Add a line on the right side as well to finish the hat's brim.
Step 19: Use the angled line at the top as a guide to draw Applejack's front foot that's on this side of the body. Follow the basic path of the line as you make the shape thicker and darken the lines. Pay attention to how the leg bends and how the bottom part is thicker the the top.
Step 20: Now use the other line at the top as a guide to create the front leg that's on the other side of Applejack's body. Follow the path of the guide as you thicken up the shape of the leg. Draw a curved line at the top of the shape for extra detail.
Step 21: Use the lines under the torso as guides to draw Applejack's hind legs the same way you did her front legs. Follow the basic path of the guides as you make the shapes thicker. Sketch lightly at first to get the structure of the leg right. When you're happy with what you have, darken the lines more.
Step 22: Draw the rest of Applejack's body using the initial lines and shapes as guides.
Step 23: Use the curved line on the left as a guide to draw Applejack's tail. The top part of the tail is basically a long curved line that follows the shape of the guide. The bottom part should be big and curved. The second part of the tail is the bottom part where the tail is tied and forms a shape similar to the one for the mane. This shape is a series of curved lines to represent the ends of Applejack's hair.
Step 24: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Applejack from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 25: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Applejack! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Applejack drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Applejack drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Draw her cutie mark on her upper thigh. Applejack's cutie mark consists of three red apples with a couple of green leaves above each apple. Color her hat light brown, and her mane and tail yellow. Her body is light orange. Leave three tiny circles below her eye blank to represent her freckles. Her eyes are green, and the ties for the mane and tail are red. The inside of her mouth is dark red, and her tongue is pink. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Applejack from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
