The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a small, angled line similar to the letter L for the basketball player's nose. At the bottom of the line, to the right, draw two tiny, curved lines for the nostril.
Step 2: At the top of the nose, on the left side, draw a short, angled line for the first eyebrow. To the right, draw the other eyebrow the same way. The basketball player's eyebrows should be similar to upside- down check marks.
Step 3: Under each eyebrow, draw a small, triangular shape for the basketball player's eyes. If you'd like, you can add a dot inside each eye for pupils, but the character looks cool with blank eyes.
Step 4: Under the nose, draw a thin, rectangular shape for the mouth. Make the sides of the basketball player's mouth pointy. Draw a short line below the mouth for the lower lip.
Step 5: Draw a curved, vertical line above the eye on the left for the forehead. Below the eye on the left, draw a wavy line for the rest of the face. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape right. There should be a bump below the eye for the basketball player's cheekbone. Only darken the line when you get the shape right. At the bottom, curve the line to the right to create the chin.
Step 6: To the right of the basketball player's face, draw a curved line similar in shape to a backward letter C for the ear.
Step 7: For the basketball player's hairline, draw a wavy line starting at the ear. Curve it up and to the left across the forehead. Now draw a wavy line at the top that curves to the right and then down for the rest of the head. Like before, sketch lightly at first. Curve the bottom part toward the left for the neck.
Step 8: Below the neck, on the right side, draw a long, oval-like shape for the shirt's arm hole. The top part of this shape will be the basketball player's shoulder. Inside the shape, draw a short line for the chest.
Step 9: Starting at the shoulder, draw a line that curves to the top, right side for the bicep. Above that, draw a curved line for the forearm. To the right, draw long line that curves down and to the left for the other side of the basketball player's arm. The middle of the shape should bend to create the elbow.
Step 10: At the top of the arm, draw two short, thin shapes for the fingers that are visible from this angle. The character will be palming the basketball, so from this angle only the two fingers will be visible. To the draw the basketball, first make four small marks to indicate the ball's height and width. Connect the marks using curved lines to form the rest of the circle. If you're struggling to draw the basketball, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a lid or a coin.
Step 11: Below the neck, draw a couple of sloping lines for the top of the torso. On the left side, draw a long, curved, vertical line for the front part of the torso. On the right side, draw a series of short, sloping lines for the wrinkly back part of the shirt. Draw a curved line at the bottom for the shirt tucked into the basketball player's shorts. Add some more lines inside the shape.
Step 12: On the left side, draw a series of curved lines that slope toward the bottom for the first part of the basketball player's other arm. Draw the bottom of the arm as a sloping line. At the end, draw a thin, short, U-shaped line for the thumb. At the bottom, draw a few thin shapes made up of curved lines for the fingers.
Step 13: Below the torso, on the left side, draw a long, vertical line for the first part of the basketball player's shorts. On the right side, draw another long line for the other side of the shorts. At the bottom, draw curved line for the opening of the first short leg. Near the middle of the shape, draw a vertical line to split the legs. Add the other leg opening on the bottom, left. Then add some strokes at the top.
Step 14: Draw the bottom part of the basketball player's first leg as two lines that curve down and then to the right. Make the shape thin toward the right and close off the end using a small, curved line.
Step 15: Draw the basketball player's shoe as a big shape at the end of the leg that's thick at the top and thin at the bottom. Use a wavy line for the right side of the shape, which is the bottom of the shoe. Add a short line inside the leg for the sock.
Step 16: Draw the leg on the other side the same way but don't overlap the lines for the first leg. Most of the leg and shoe will be hidden behind the basketball player's first leg, so only draw the visible portion. Make the shape of the shoe wide at the top. Only a small part of the shoe's tip should be visible below the first leg.
Step 17: Now add the extra details on the basketball player. Start by drawing a couple of intersecting lines to the ball similar to a plus sign. Draw a curved line to the top and bottom of the basketball to complete its design. Draw a number in front of the shirt. I picked 7, but you can pick your favorite basketball player's number. Make the number thick and bold. Add some long lines to the side of the shirt and shorts. If you'd like, you can look up your favorite basketball team's uniform and try to duplicate its design on your drawing. Add a few lines within the shapes of the shoes for the soles, laces and overall design. You can also look up your favorite basketball shoe and try to duplicate its design or logo on your drawing.
Step 18: Draw the basketball hoop as a thin, long, horizontal rectangle. Below the hoop, draw two long, vertical lines for the sides of the net. Between the lines, draw a series of intersecting lines for the detail on the net. The lines should be diagonal so that they create little diamond shapes where the lines cross. At the bottom, draw a few V- shaped lines. Draw a square- like shape on the left side of the hoop.
Step 19: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your basketball player drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your basketball player drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Color your drawing however you'd like. For this look, use brown for the hair and light brown for the skin. Color the rim and basketball orange. Use blue and red for the uniform and shoes. Use gray for the net and for shadows on the uniform. You can also color your drawing using your favorite team's colors instead. Don't forget to pause to draw at your own pace.
