The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a big circle for the center of the sunflower. First make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a lid or a coin. Darken the edge of the circle using squiggly lines for the texture in the center of the sunflower.
Step 2: Starting at the top of the circle, draw the sunflower petals using long, curved lines. Each petal should be made up of two curved lines that come together at the top to form a point. Follow the curvature of the circle so that the petals tilt to the right the farther down they are. The sunflower's petals don't have to be the exact same size, but try to make them similar in size. Vary the spacing between the petals. Sometimes their edges will touch, and other times they won't.
Step 3: Continue to draw the flower petals along the lower, right side of the circle. Along the side of the circle, the petals should have a horizontal orientation. Along the bottom edge of the circle, the sunflower petals should be vertical and upside-down.
Step 4: Draw more flower petals along the lower, left side of the circle. Remember to keep the petals roughly the same size and space them out a bit.
Step 5: Add more petals on the top, left side to close the gap. You may find it easier to draw the flower petals if you turn your paper as you go around the circle. You can also vary the size of your petals depending on the variety of sunflower you want to draw.
Step 6: Go around the circle again and add more flower petals between the first petals. Most of the time only the top parts of these petals will be visible. Just draw the tips peeking from behind. If some petals are too close together, you can skip that gap and not draw another petal there. Remember that you can turn your paper as you draw the petals if you find that easier. It's okay if your sunflower's petals aren't all exactly the same size. They don't have to be perfect.
Step 7: Draw two long lines directly under the sunflower head for the stem. The farther apart you draw these lines, the thicker the stem will be.
Step 8: On the right side of the sunflower's stem, draw a curved, horizontal line for the first part of a leaf. If you'd like, you can add a second line parallel to the first to make this stem thicker.
Step 9: On the bottom side of the stem, draw a curved line for the bottom side of the sunflower's leaf. Add a curved line at the top to finish the leaf. The two curved lines should come to a point on the right.
Step 10: Draw a leaf on the left side the same way. Start with a curved line for the stem.
Step 11: Add the curved lines at the top and bottom to complete the sunflower's other leaf. Notice the bigger space on the bottom compared to the top. This gives the leaves a curved shape.
Step 12: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your sunflower drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your sunflower drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use brown for the middle. Color lightly at first. Then gradually darken the color to the level that you like. Use a bit of yellow- orange at the base of the sunflower petals. Use yellow on top of yellow-orange to finish the petals. Use yellow-green mixed with green for the sunflower's leaves and stems. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
