To draw a Leprecahun step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to go at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, and each step is explained in the text below the photo, so you'll know exactly what to draw in each step. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods! Take your time and draw at your own pace.

 

The written step-by-step video tutorial:

 

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

 

 

Step 1: Lightly sketch two small ovals for the leprechaun's eyes. When you get the shapes of the eyes right, darken the lines. Inside each eye, draw two tiny circles to represent glare. Shade the eyes but don't overlap the tiny glare circles. Draw a small, curved line over each eye for extra detail.

 

Step 2: Draw a short, vertical line to the left of the eyes for the side of the head. Below that, draw a curved line for the leprechaun's cheek. Continue to draw the line and curve it toward the right side for the bottom of the head. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. When you get the shape right, darken the line.

Step 3: Below the eye on the left, draw a tiny, C-shaped line for the leprechaun's nose. Below the eye on the right, farther down, draw a short, horizontal line for the mouth.

 

Step 4: Starting on the left side of the leprechaun's head, draw a long, wavy line across the top for the hat's brim. The left side of the line should dip low, and the right side should curve up. Curve the left tip up and the right tip down. The whole thing should be similar to the letter S on its side.

 

Step 5: On the right side of the head, draw a thick rectangular shape for the leprechaun's hair and sideburn. Use short, curved lines to draw the edges of the shape for a curly texture.

Step 6: To the right of the sideburn, draw a short, curved line for the leprechaun's ear. Above each eye, draw a thin, horizontal shape made up of curved lines for the eyebrows.

 

Step 7: Above the brim of the hat, on the left side, draw a vertical line for the top part. On the right side, draw another vertical line. Then connect both lines with a curved, horizontal line at the top. Inside the shape, draw another curved, horizontal line for the bottom part of the leprechaun's hat.

Step 8: Inside the leprechaun's hat, near the middle, draw a curved, horizontal line for the hat band. Near the left side of the band, draw a couple of small rectangles for the buckle. Draw a four-leaf clover coming out of the leprechaun's hat band using four short, curved lines.

 

Step 9: Draw a small bowtie directly under the leprechaun's head. Use a half-circle for the knot and a couple of angled lines for the ends.

 

Step 10: Below the leprechaun's head, on the right side, draw an angled line similar to a backward letter L for the coat. Connect the angled line to the bowtie using a vertical line. On the right, draw an angled line for the hidden arm. To the right of the bowtie, draw an angled, vertical line for the coat's lapel.

Step 11: To the left, draw the other side of the coat the same way but make the shape thinner. Farther to the left, draw the leprechaun's angled arm using a couple of sloping lines.

 

Step 12: Above the coat sleeve, draw a small arc for the thumb. To the left of that, draw another arc for the index finger. Below that, draw a couple of small ovals for the leprechaun's other folded fingers. Close off the shape of the hand at the bottom using a curved line. Above the hand, draw an oval for the leprechaun's gold coin that he's flipping. Add a few short, curved lines around the coin to emphasize its movement.

Step 13: Draw a couple horizontal lines between the coat for the belt. Add a couple of small rectangles inside the leprechaun's belt for the buckle. Draw a line above the belt for the shirt.

 

Step 14: On the lower, right side of the coat, draw the first part of the leprechaun's shorts using a couple of curved lines. The cuff of the shorts should be similar to the bottom part of a square. The lines on the sides are for the torso. Below the shorts, draw a couple of small rectangles for the shoe buckle. Below the buckle, draw a wide, trapezoid-like shape for the shoe.

 

Step 15: Draw the left side of the shorts the same way. Use a square-like shape for the cuff. This foot will be pointing left, so draw the rectangles for the shoe buckle near the left edge. The shape of the leprechaun's foot should be similar to a triangle pointing to the left.

Step 16: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your leprechaun drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser.

Final Step: Color your leprechaun drawing using color pencils, markers or crayons! Use different shades of green for the clothes. Color lightly at first and gradually build up to the color that you like. Mix different types of greens too! Use a medium green for the hat and coat and a dark green for the bowtie and shorts.

Use light green or yellow-green for the leprechaun's four-leaf clover, the shirt and the socks. Color the hat band, the belt and the shoes brown. Use yellow for the leprechaun's gold coin and all the buckles. Use orange for the hair and eyebrows, peach for the skin and a bit of pink on the cheeks.
