Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a long oval in the middle of the page. The oval doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s only a guide for Scooby-Doo’s head.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the oval, one vertical and one horizontal. The vertical line should be close to the right side and the horizontal line should be close to the top of the oval. These are construction lines that will help you place Scooby-Doo’s facial features later.
Step 3: To the right of the horizontal construction line, draw a line that goes outside of the oval, turns down and then enters the oval. End the line to the left of the vertical construction line just below the horizontal construction line. Below that line, draw another line that resembles the letter U. This will be a guide for Scooby-Doo’s muzzle and mouth.
Step 4: On top of the horizontal construction line, draw two small ovals. These will be guides for Scooby-Doo’s eyes.
Step 5: Above Scooby-Doo’s head, draw two pointy arches as guides for his ears.
Step 6: Draw two lines below Scooby-Doo’s head for his neck.
Step 7: Below Scooby-Doo’s neck, draw two curved lines for his collar. Under his collar, draw a diamond shape as a guide for his dog tag.
Step 8: Now you’re done with the initial sketch! You have the basic Scooby-Doo shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 9: Darken Scooby-Doo’s eyes. Inside each eye, draw a circle for his pupil and shade it in. Above each eye draw a small curved shape for Scooby-Doo’s eyebrows. Draw a curved line under the left eye for detail.
Step 10: Using the initial shape of the muzzle as a guide, draw the bridge of Scooby-Doo’s nose, which begins between his eyes and then curves up slightly. At the end draw his nose, which is similar to an upside-down triangle with rounded corners.
Step 11: Under Scooby-Doo’s nose, draw his mouth using the initial lines as guides. Make the line for Scooby-Doo’s smile curvy instead of straight, which gives him a goofier look.
Step 12: Use the U shape as a guide to draw Scooby-Doo’s open mouth. Use a curved line to the right of his mouth for his lip and an even bigger curve under his mouth for his big chin.
Step 13: Draw two curved lines inside Scooby-Doo’s mouth for his tongue. Add the extra detail on his muzzle too: two lines over his smile for wrinkles, the hair on his chin and some spots.
Step 14: Draw Scooby-Doo’s ears using the initial shapes as guides. Draw some lines within the shape to indicate the ear opening. Draw the right one folded down for more character. Darken the rest of Scooby-Doo’s head and neck too.
Step 15: Draw Scooby-Doo’s dog tag and give it a ring on top that holds the tag to the collar. Inside the tag draw his initials: SD. Use the image above for further reference for the initials. Tighten the shape of Scooby-Doo’s collar and make it darker.
Step 16: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Scooby-Doo. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 17: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Scooby-Doo! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Scooby-Doo drawing.
Step 18: For a completely finished Scooby-Doo drawing, you have to color it. Color his fur light brown. His ears and tongue are pink. The inside of his mouth is black along with his eyebrows and nose. His collar and tag are light blue, and the trimming on the tag and ring are yellow. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Scooby-Doo.
