How to Draw a Smurf
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw smurf. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a small oval near the top half of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for the smurf’s head.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place the smurf's facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw a small oval on the left side of where the construction lines meet. Notice how the oval comes outside of the side of the main oval. This is a guide for the smurf's nose.
Step 4: Now draw the smurf's eyes. Draw a long oval that sits on top of the horizontal construction line and make sure that its left side grazes the vertical construction line. Draw the second eye to the left, but only the top part because half of it is hiding behind his nose.
Step 5: On the bottom part of the main oval and to the right of the vertical construction line, draw a shape as a guide for the smurf's mouth. The shape is similar to a tilted letter D.
Step 6: Draw an arc on the right side of the main oval as a guide for the smurf's ear.
Step 7: Under the smurf's head, draw a guide for his body. First, draw an oval that’s a bit smaller than the head. The oval should be placed slightly to the right of the head. Then, draw a couple of lines to connect the oval to the bottom of the head.
Step 8: On the right side of the body, draw a guide for the smurf's arm. First draw a straight line toward his ear. At the end of that line, draw a circle for the palm of his hand and draw four small lines on the outside of his hand for the smurf's fingers.
Step 9: Below the smurf's body, draw guide lines for his feet. First, draw an oval that’s a bit longer than the length of the body for his foot. Than draw the other foot on the left side but only draw a portion of it. Draw a small line to connect the foot with the smurf's body.
Step 10: On the left side of the smurf's body, draw a guide for his other arm. First draw a vertical line for his arm, then at the end of the line, draw a circle for his hand.
Step 11: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Smurf shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 12: Tighten the shape of the smurf's nose. Use the small oval as a guide and give his nose a slight bend upward.
Step 13: Draw the smurf's eyes by darkening the original ovals except for the part in the middle; the two eyes are somehow connected. Inside each eye draw a smaller circle and shade it in for the pupils. Above each eye draw an arc for the eyebrows.
Step 14: Use the D shape as a guide to draw the smurf's mouth. Bend the smile more and draw a smile line at the end on the right side. Inside the smurf's mouth, draw an arc for the tongue.
Step 15: Draw the rest of the smurf's face by darkening the left side of the main oval. Also draw the ear. Have the top part come in toward the circle more and draw a few lines within it to represent the inner structure.
Step 16: The smurf's hat is a little tricky ,so it’s divided into two parts. First draw the brim of the hat by drawing a line that extends from his ear, across the forehead (below the eyebrows) and ends on the other side of his head. Then draw a line that goes from the smurf's nose to just above the eyebrows.
Step 17: The second part of the smurf's hat is just one long curved line. Start drawing the line above his ear, then move it to the top and curve it back down toward the brim. Be careful with the height of the hat. If the line is too low, you’ll have a flat hat; if it’s too high, you’ll have a tall hat.
Step 18: Now draw the smurf's right arm by using the initial lines as guides. Go around the guides, making his arm thicker as you go along. The same goes for his fingers; make them chubbier. Draw a short curved line inside his palm for extra detail.
Step 19: Draw the smurf's body using the shapes below his head. Draw a curved horizontal line across the middle to represent the top of his pants. On the right side of the body, draw a half circle for his tail.
Step 20: Use the ovals as guides to draw the smurf's legs. Draw a couple of arcs similar to the letter C above the ovals for his bent knees. Then just darken the ovals for his feet.
Step 21: Draw the smurf's hand on the left. You only have to draw a portion of it because part of it is hiding behind his body. Use the oval to draw a fist, then draw a series of curved lines for the fingers. This can be tricky, so use the image above for further reference.
Step 22: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of a smurf. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.
Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for any ink to dry, and then erase your pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of a smurf! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your smurf drawing in its entirety.
Final Step: For a completely finished smurf drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color the smurf's skin blue. Don’t forget his tail! The inside of his mouth is black, and his tongue is red. That’s it! The rest is white. You now have a completed drawing of a smurf from the Smurfs.
