How to Draw Sid (Ice Age)
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Sid the Sloth from Ice Age. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a big upside-down triangle. Make the corners of the triangle round instead of pointy and sharp. The top side of the triangle should bulge up a bit. This triangle will be the guide for Sid's head.
Step 2: Draw two intersecting lines, one vertical and one horizontal, across the triangle. The lines should cross each other near the middle of the triangle. These are construction lines that will help you place Sid's facial features later on.
Step 3: On the top corners of the triangle, draw two small circles as guides for the eyes. Sid has different-sized eyes that give him a wacky appearance, so draw the circle on the left a lot smaller than the one on the right.
Step 4: Draw a big circle sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on the left of the vertical construction line. The circle should overlap the vertical construction line on the left side a little. This will be a guide for Sid's nose.
Step 5: Below the horizontal construction line and under the nose, draw a guide for Sid's mouth. The shape of the mouth consists of two curved lines. The top line shouldn't bend that much, whereas the bottom line should bend a lot and have a shape similar to the bottom corner of the main triangle.
Step 6: Under the triangle, draw two lines as guides for the neck. Sid has a long neck, so make sure these lines are long.
Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Sid shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Use the circles on the top corners as guides to draw Sid's eyes. Darken the shapes and add some lines above and below for extra detail.
Step 9: Inside each eye, draw a small circle for the irises. Inside each iris, in the middle, add a dot for the pupils and a tiny circle off to the side to represent glare.
Step 10: Use the circle inside the head as a guide to draw Sid's nose. Follow the basic shape of the circle as you darken the lines and create the nose. The top and right sides of the nose should be flat. Draw the left side using a series of quick, short strokes to represent fur. Inside the nose, near the bottom, draw a couple of curved lines for the nostrils.
Step 11: Draw Sid's mouth under the nose using the initial curved lines as guides. Follow the path of the guides as you darken the lines. Use quick, short strokes to draw the top line for a furry texture.
Step 12: Add another curved line under the mouth for Sid's bottom lip. This line should have the same shape as the mouth's bottom line.
Step 13: Inside the mouth, at the top, draw Sid's big buck teeth. The teeth should be different sizes, with the one on the left being bigger.
Step 14: Inside the mouth, at the bottom, draw a series of curved lines that follow the path of the mouth for Sid's bottom teeth. In between the rows of teeth, add a couple of curved lines for the tongue.
Step 15: Use the initial triangle shape as a guide to draw Sid's head. Follow the basic path of the triangle and use quick, short strokes as you darken the lines to give the head a furry texture. The top of the head should bulge up more and form a dome shape, and the fur should wrap around the eyes.
Step 16: Draw Sid's neck using the long lines under the head as guides. Don't forget to use quick, short strokes as you darken the lines to create that furry look!
Step 17: Behind the eyes, draw a few long, thick lines for Sid's weird eyelashes/hair. These lines should curve and be different sizes.
Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Sid the sloth from Ice Age. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Sid! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Sid drawing.
Last Step: For a completely finished Sid drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Sid is brown with a white section around the nose, mouth and neck. The key to creating Sid's furry texture is adding separate layers of different shades of brown. Use light brown, dark brown, and even some gray and yellow! Use as many earth-tones as you have. As you color Sid's fur, use quick, short strokes to create a furry effect. This process takes a very long time, but it looks neat in the end. Color his eyes green and his nose light purple. His bottom lip and tongue are pink, and the inside of his mouth is black. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Sid from Ice Age.
