The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a short, curved line for the shape of mini Ariel's first eye. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape of the line right. Draw another short curved line on the right side for the other eye. Make the lines thicker to represent the eyelashes. Pay attention to the placement of the lines. Don't draw them too far apart.
Ariel's eye on the right should be slightly smaller than the one on the left because of the perspective. Draw two small triangle-like shapes on the left side of the first eye to emphasize the eyelashes. Add two small triangle-like shapes on the right side of the other eye too.
Step 2: Under each of the Little Mermaid's eyes, draw a small circle for the irises. The circle on the right should be close to the right tip of the line. The circle on the left should be closer to the middle. The circle on the right should also be a tiny bit smaller than the one on the left.
Step 3: Inside each iris, near the top, left side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. In the middle of the iris, draw a big dot for the pupil. Draw another big dot inside the other eye for mini Ariel's other pupil.
Step 4: Above each eye, draw a thick, curved horizontal line as a guide for chibi Ariel's eyebrows. The eyebrow on the right should be a bit shorter than the one on the left because of perspective.
Step 5: Near the lower, left side of the eye on the right, draw a small line similar to a greater-than sign (>) for Ariel's nose. Under the nose, near the left side, draw a short, curved horizontal line for the mouth.
Step 6: Above mini Ariel's eyes, draw a long wavy line for the top part of her hair. The line should dip down close to the eye on the left. Add a small line on the left side to give the clump of hair a point.
Step 7: Draw a long, curved, diagonal line on the left side for more of the Little Mermaid's flowing hair. To the left of the eye, draw a small V-shaped line for the part of the hair in front of Ariel's ear.
Step 8: Draw mini Ariel's head by first drawing a curved, vertical line next to the eye on the right. Curve the line more to create the cheek and add a small line below the mouth for the lower part of the head. Connect the right side with the short line below the mouth using a smooth, curved line. Then connect the bottom to the ear to finish up the shape of Ariel's head.
Step 9: Starting on the right side of the face, draw a long line that curves up, then to the left, for more of chibi Ariel's hair. The left end of this line should almost connect with the tip of hair created earlier.
Step 10: On the lower, left side of the head, draw two curved, parallel diagonal lines for Ariel's first arm.
Step 11: Draw mini Ariel's hand and fingers on the left side of the arm using a series of short lines. Draw only three fingers and a thumb and make them small. They should look like less-than signs (<). The thumb should be at the bottom and resemble the letter V. Pause the video to get the shapes right.
Step 12: To the right of the arm, draw two short horizontal lines and a longer vertical line for the left side of mini Ariel's bra. Then draw two curved lines on the right that come to a point to form the first part of the triangle-like bra.
Step 13: Using three curved lines, draw the other triangle-like shape on the right to finish Ariel's bra.
Step 14: On the lower, right side of the head, draw two curved diagonal lines for mini Ariel's other arm.
Step 15: Draw this hand the same as the other one, only draw the thumb on top this time. Ariel's thumb should be similar to an upside- down letter V. Draw the fingers small. The fingers should be similar to greater- than signs (>).
Step 16: Draw a long, wavy line starting at the top of the head and moving toward the left for the rest of mini Ariel's hair. The line should dip down, then curve up slightly and finish downward again. Add a smaller line at the bottom to give the clump of hair a pointy tip.
Step 17: Continue drawing chibi Ariel's hair by adding another pointy tip on the left side. Make this tip wider. Keep drawing the curved line for the bottom of the hair until it reaches the arm on the left.
Step 18: Draw a long, curved line under the bra for the rest of mini Ariel's torso. The line should start under the arm on the left and curve toward the right side of the bra.
Step 19: Draw two curved lines under the torso for the fin-like sections at the base of Ariel's tail. The line on the right should be shorter because of the perspective.
Step 20: Draw a long curved line under the torso for the bottom part of Ariel's mermaid tail. The line should start under the fin- like shape on the right, then curve and end to the left of the hand. The top of the tail is just a small line. The rest of the tail is hidden behind the arm.
Step 21: From the tip of the Little Mermaid's tail, draw a curved line that slopes down for the first fin. Add another line at the bottom that curves up to meet the first line and forms the rest of mini Ariel's fin.
Step 22: Draw chibi Ariel's other tail fin the same way as the first. Use a couple of curved lines that come to a point. A slight portion of the fin will be hidden behind the hair, so don't overlap the lines.
Step 23: Using a pen or marker, carefully go over the lines to make your Ariel drawing permanent. After inking, get rid of ever y pencil mark with an eraser.
Final Step: Color your Little Mermaid drawing using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Use red for Ariel's hair. To get a gradient effect on the eyes, color the top parts dark blue and the bottom parts light blue. Use peach for the skin. If you don't have peach, use yellow-orange or light brown. Using the peach color, draw the bottom edges of the eyes. Leave the inside blank. Color Ariel's bra purple and add a bit of pink to the cheeks. Color the fins blue-green and the tail green. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
