How to Draw the Flash
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw the Flash from DC Comics' Justice League Unlimited. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the top half of the page. This will be the basic shape for the Flash's head. It doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide.
Step 2: Under the circle draw an angled line with three corners. This will be the Flash's jaw/chin.
Step 3: Draw two lines below the Flash's head as guides for the neck.
Step 4: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head shape, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place the Flash's facial features later on.
Step 5: Draw two small triangles as guides for the Flash's eyes. The eyes should sit on top of the horizontal constriction line and on either side of the vertical construction line.
Step 6: On the left side of the Flash's head, where the circle and the jaw guides meet, draw a zigzag line similar to the letter Z as a guide for the lightning bolt on his mask.
Step 7: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Flash shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Tighten the shape of the Flash's eyes as you make the lines darker. Draw the Flash's furrowed brow as a couple of curved lines.
Step 9: Draw the Flash's nose by using the vertical construction line as a guide. The top of the nose starts on the edge of the right eye and ends at the bottom of the original circle. Draw a small curved line on the left side of the Flash's nose for the nostril.
Step 10: Below the nose draw a long line for the Flash's mouth. Curve the line a bit to give this Justice League Unlimited character a smirk.
Step 11: Use the initial Z shape as a guide to draw the lightning bolt on the Flash's mask. Simply follow the path of the line and make the shape thicker as you draw. The top should come to a point, and the bottom should be flat.
Step 12: Draw the base of the lightning bolt as a long oval. Draw the oval behind the lightning bolt and place it where the original circle meets the Flash's jaw.
Step 13: Use the initial line as a guide to draw the lower part of the Flash's face. Give the line a small bump below the eye for his cheekbone and darken the rest of the line.
Step 14: Draw the edge of the Flash's mask by drawing an angled line across his face. The line starts at the lower left side of the jaw, then moves up toward the horizontal construction line. From there it angles down toward the Flash's mouth, arcs across the nose and angles up to the other side of the face.
Step 15: Darken the top part of the original circle to create the Flash's head and darken the two lines underneath for his neck. Draw a couple more lines inside the neck for extra detail.
Step 16: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of the Flash. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 17: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of the Flash from Justice League Unlimited! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Flash drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Flash drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color his mask red and the lightning bolt yellow. The Flash's skin is peach color, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! That's it! You now have a completed drawing of the Flash from Justice League Unlimited.
