Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a big circle near the bottom of the page as a guide for the first part of Max's body. First draw four small marks to indicate the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. If you do want a perfect circle, trace the outer rim of a glass, a cup or any other object with a circular edge.
Step 2: Draw a big arc on the right side of the circle to complete the guide for Max's body. First draw a small mark on the right side to determine the length of the arc, then connect the mark to the circle using curved lines. The arc should be wide, and the curvature should almost be parallel to the right edge of the circle.
Step 3: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the first part of the dog's head. Draw this circle the same way as the first. Start with four marks, then connect the marks using curved lines. This circle should be about half the size of the first circle. Pay attention to the distance between this circle and Max's body circle. Don't draw it too high up.
Step 4: Draw a curved horizontal line across the head. This construction line will help you place Max's facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the dog's head for another construction line.
Step 5: Draw a long vertical line on either side of the head that connects to the body as a guide for the rest of Max's head and neck.
Step 6: Draw a curved line on the left side of the head as a guide for Max's muzzle. The curved line should meet the horizontal construction line at the top. Pay attention to its size relative to the head.
Step 7: Draw two curved lines above the head on either side as a guide for Max's ears. The shape of these curved lines should be similar to the letter U. The curved line on the right should be bigger and wider than the one on the left, and it should overlap the head a bit.
Step 8: Add a line on top of the U-shaped lines to complete the guides for Max's ears. Then draw a line on the left that curves down toward the right and touches the head.
Step 9: Draw four long lines under the body as guides for Max's legs. Bend the lines a bit at the tip to indicate where the feet will be. Bend the lines for the hind legs along the middle too to indicate where the joints will be. Add a curved line on the top right side of the dog's body as a guide for the tail.
That's it for the initial sketch of Max from The Secret Life of Pets! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined drawing.
Step 10: Draw the eyes inside the head. Use the construction lines as guides for placement. The shape of the eyes is basically a small arc with a line underneath it. Max's eyes should be very close together. They should be on top of the horizontal construciton line and on either side of the vertical line. The eye on the right should be bigger and wider than the one on the left because of the perspective.
Step 11: Inside each eye, near the right edge, draw a small circle for Max's irises. The iris on the right should be a bit bigger. Draw a tiny circle on the top left side of each iris to represent glare. Inside each iris, draw a smaller circle and shade it in for the pupils.
Step 12: Above each eye, draw a thick, curved line for Max's eyebrows. The eye on the right should be a bit bigger and longer than the one on the left because of perspective.
Step 13: Draw a big oval-like shape inside the muzzle for Max's nose. The top left side of the nose should touch the side of the muzzle. The right side of the nose should touch the initial circle. The shape of the nose is almost like an egg. Give it sort of a rounded point on the right side. The bottom edge of the dog's nose should be more flat than the top edge. Draw two small ovals inside the nose, near the bottom edge, for the nostrils.
Step 14: Use the initial curved line next to the head as a guide to draw Max's muzzle and mouth. Follow the basic path of the guide on the left side, and then curve the line to the right under the nose before it hits the bottom. The line should stretch far into the head, then curve up and almost touch the lower edge of the initial circle. When you get the shape of the mouth right, make the line thicker and darker.
Step 15: Draw Max's teeth as a set of lines right under the shape of the mouth. To create the teeth, first draw two small V-shaped lines on the sides for the dog's canines , then connect the canines with a line. Add tiny lines in between the canines to separate the rest of the teeth and add a curved line on the right for the molars.
Step 16: Draw a curved line under the teeth for the bottom part of the mouth. Max's bottom lip shouldn't touch the initial guide line. When you get the shape right, make the line thicker and darker.
Step 17: Follow the basic path of the initial guide as you darken the line and create the chin. Inside Max's mouth, at the bottom, draw another curved line for the bottom row of teeth.
Step 18: Use the inital U-shaped lines on top of the head as guides to draw Max's ears. Follow the basic path of the guides and make the ear shape rounder as you darken the lines. Draw another curved line where the ear folds over to make the shape thicker. Draw two short lines on the left side for the other side of the base of the ear. Follow the basic path of the guide on the right but make the shape wider and rounder to create the other ear.
Step 19: Use the initial lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of Max's head. Simply follow the initial guides and darken the lines to create the shape of the head. Don't draw the lines for the neck too low because that's where the dog collar will go.
Step 20: Use a series of curved lines to draw the collar under the head. First draw two short lines on the sides, then connect them using a long curved line for the top edge of the collar. Draw a second curved line parallel to the one above for the bottom edge of the collar.
Step 21: Draw a small bone shape below Max's collar for the dog tag. The shape of the bone is made up of two short horizontal lines that connect two lines on the sides that resemble the number 3.
Step 22: Use the lines under the body, on the left side, as guides to draw Max's front legs. Follow the basic path of the guide but make the shape a bit thicker as you darken the lines. The base of the leg, the top part, should be wide. Use quick, short strokes as you draw the leg to represent the fur. Draw the other front leg the same way but make it a bit smaller because it's on the other side. Curve the bottom tip of the legs to create the feet. Add tiny lines on the feet to separate the individual toes.
Step 23: Use the lines under the body, on the right side, as guides to draw Max's hind legs the same way. Make the shape of the leg thicker as you follow the basic path of the guide. Bend the shape of the leg at the joints. The base of the leg at the top should be wide, and the bottom half should be very skinny. Draw the other hind leg the same way but make it a bit smaller because of the perspective.
Step 24: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of Max's body. As you follow the guides, use quick, short strokes to create the fur on the underside of the body. To draw the top part of the body, simply darken the guide lines. Use the curved line on the top right side of the body as a guide to draw the dog's tail. Use quick, short strokes surrounding the guide line to create the shape of the tail.
Step 25: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.
Step 26: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your drawing of Max from The Secret Life of Pets using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Use light brown for the patch over the eye on the right, the ears, the irises, a spot on the body, the rump and bottom half of the tail. Use black for Max's nose but make the top part a tiny bit lighter to represent shine. Use pink and dark brown for the inside of the mouth, blue for the collar and yellow- orange for the dog tag. Use a bit of gray on the bottom edges of the body for shadows and to give the figure more dimension and volume.
