Intro: Start drawing Elmo with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: To draw Sesame Street's Elmo, start with a wide oval in the middle of the page. This will be the basic shape for Elmo's head.
Step 2: Next, draw a vertical line that intersects the oval in half and a horizontal line that goes straight across it. These will be construction lines that will help you place Elmo's features later on.
Step 3: Now draw an oval on top of the horizontal construction line. Draw this oval so the top of it is close to touching the top of the circle. This will be Elmo's nose.
Step 4: Draw two circles on top of Elmo's nose. The circles should overlap the nose slightly and be drawn on either side of the vertical construction line.
Step 5: Draw a long line below the horizontal construction line. Underneath that line, draw a wide U-shaped curve. This will be Elmo's mouth.
Step 6: That's it for the initial sketch of Elmo from Sesame Street and Elmo's World! You have the basic Elmo shape, so now you will go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 7: Darken in his the shape of Elmo's nose, and then his eyes. When you darken in Elmo's eyes, don't draw over the lines that overlap his nose because his eyes sit behind his nose. Draw two circles in the center of Elmo's eye circles and shade them in, leaving a small circle in the corner white to represent glare. These are Elmo's pupils.
Step 8: Now tighten Elmo's mouth. Elmo is a furry character, so when you do his upper lip, draw it using a series of curves while still following the main shape. Draw his bottom lip as a plain U shape without the series of furry curves.
Step 9: Elmo also has a furry face, so again, using the main shape of his head as a guide, draw his head using a series of curves and rounded spikes to represent his fur.
Step 10: That's it! You have drawn a nice sketch of Elmo from Sesame Street and Elmo's World. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 11: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Elmo! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Elmo drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Elmo drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Elmo is a very simple character to color. Just color his face red, his nose orange and the inside of his mouth black. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Elmo from Sesame Street and Elmo's World.
