How to Draw Fluttershy
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle on the top left part of the paper. It doesn’t need to be perfect. It’s just a basic shape for Fluttershy’s head. Leave enough room at the bottom so you can draw the body later on.
Step 2: Inside the circle, draw two intersecting lines, one horizontal and one vertical. The vertical line should be close to the left side of the circle, and the horizontal line should be close to the bottom. Bend the lines so they contour to the shape of the sphere. These are construction lines that will help you place Fluttershy’s facial features later on.
Step 3: Draw two ovals as guides for Fluttershy’s eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The oval on the left side should be thinner because of the perspective.
Step 4: Below Fluttershy’s head, draw a bigger oval lying on its side. This will be a guide for Fluttershy's torso. Pay attention to the size of this oval in relation to the first circle. The edges of the circle and oval should touch.
Step 5: Under the torso, draw two lines as guides for Fluttershy’s legs. The line on the left should be angled near the middle to represent the bent leg. The other leg should be a tiny bit longer and slightly curved.
Step 6: Draw a triangle-like shape on the top, right side of the head as a guide for this My Little Pony character's ear. On the right side of the body, draw a long wavy line as a guide for Fluttershy’s tail.
Step 7: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Use the initial oval shapes as guides to draw Fluttershy’s eyes. Darken the edges of the ovals. The top part should be placed lower, and it should be curved for the eyelids. Draw the eyelashes on the sides of the eyes. Draw a small oval inside each eye. This oval represents the glare on the eyes.
Step 9: Inside each eye, draw another oval behind the glare and shade it in for the pupils. Leave a tiny circle at the bottom of each pupil unshaded for more glare. Draw another line on the left side of each pupil for Fluttershy’s irises.
Step 10: On the lower left side of the circle, under the left eye, draw a small arc for Fluttershy’s muzzle. Use the construction lines as guides to help you with the placement. The lower part of Fluttershy’s head is higher up than the edge of the original circle. On the top part of the nose, draw a tiny curved line for the nostril. Under the nostril, draw a longer curved line for the smile.
Step 11: Use the triangle-like shape on top of the head as a guide to draw Fluttershy’s ear. Darken the shape and make it more curved. Draw a line within the shape for the ear's structure. Darken the left side of the main circle for the left side of Fluttershy’s head.
Step 12: Fluttershy’s mane is a bit tricky, so it's divided into three parts. First add the front part of the mane by drawing a line that starts at the ear and arcs over the head to the left side of the body. Then draw a curved point similar to a spiral as the tip of Fluttershy’s hair.
Step 13: Draw a shape similar to the front part of the mane on the right side of the head. This part of Fluttershy’s mane is thinner and longer. The mane should come down below the body, and the end should come to a point in a spiral.
Step 14: Now draw the inside portion of Fluttershy’s hair. This line starts at the ear and creates a point in between her eyes before curving down toward the left side of the face. This line combined with the previous line should form somewhat of a heart shape around Fluttershy's face.
Step 15: Use the initial oval shape under Fluttershy’s head as a guide to draw the body. Follow the basic path of the oval as you darken the lines. A lot of the body is hiding behind the mane, so don't draw all of it.
Step 16: Draw this My Little Pony Character's tail by using the line on the right side of the body as a guide. Follow the basic path of the guide and make the tail thicker. Fluttershy’s tail, like her mane, ends in a pointy, curved shape.
Step 17: Use the line on the left side as guides to draw Fluttershy’s front legs. Follow the basic path of the line as you make the leg thicker. The leg should bend near the top. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the structure right. Draw the visible part of the other front leg on the other side.
Step 18: Do the same thing with Fluttershy’s hind legs. Follow the path of the line and thicken up the shape of the leg. On the left side of the leg, draw a similar line to indicate the hind leg on the other side. Be sure to draw the leg behind the tail.
Step 19: Draw the folded wing inside the body to the right of Fluttershy’s mane. First draw an arc within the shape of the body behind the mane. Then draw three small, curved lines on the inside of the wing on the left side. Then draw three lines to the right of the small, curved lines.
Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the next step.
Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Fluttershy! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Fluttershy drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Fluttershy drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Draw her cutie mark on her upper thigh. Fluttershy's cutie mark consists of three pink butterflies, but because of her folded wing, only one and a half butterflies are visible. Color her skin yellow and her mane pink. Her eyes are green. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
