How to Draw Goku
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Goku from Dragon Ball. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the bottom half of the page. The circle will make up part of Goku’s head. Draw it small so you have room to draw his big hair later.
Step 2: Below the circle, draw a V-shaped line. Round out the bottom and the sides to create Goku's jaw and chin.
Step 3: Draw a vertical line to split the head in half. Add two small lines below the first circle. These are construction lines that will help in placing Goku's facial features later on.
Step 4: Draw two vertical lines below Goku's head. On the side of each line draw a smaller line. These lines make up Goku's neck.
Step 5: Inside the first circle, on the bottom, draw two small triangle-like shapes on either side of the vertical construction line. These are guides for Goku's eyes.
Step 6: On either side of Goku's head draw an arc similar to the letter C as guides for his ears. Goku has pretty big ears, so don’t draw the guides too small.
Step 7: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Goku shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 8: Darken the shape of Goku's eyes and make them a bit bigger. Inside each eye draw a half circle and shade it in for his pupils. Add a few sketch lines under Goku's eyes for extra detail.
Step 9: For his eyebrows, draw a thick rectangle-like shape that kind of looks like a check mark above each eye. Furrow his brow a bit by adding a few lines between them. This gives Goku a determined look. Maybe he’s about to go Super Saiyan!
Step 10: Right above the smallest construction line, draw Goku's nose. His nose is similar to a diamond or an upside-down kite with the left side shaded in.
Step 11: Above the other construction line, draw his mouth. Goku will be showing his teeth in a grimace to go along with his determined gaze. Draw the shape of the mouth, then two lines on the sides to indicate his teeth. A line on the bottom makes up Goku's lip.
Step 12: Darken the lines that make up Goku's jaw and neck, and give them a more rounded shape. Draw some lines in his neck to indicate structure.
Step 13: Draw Goku's ears and make them less round. Add a few lines within them to give them structure as well.
Step 14: Goku’s hair is a bit tricky, so it’s divided into three parts. First draw the part that comes over his forehead or his bangs. Think of them as two big, curved letter V’s and smaller V’s next to them that touch his ears.
Step 15: Now draw the left side of Goku's hair, which is essentially made up of three huge spikes and a smaller one on the bottom near his ear. Use the image above if you need more reference when drawing.
Step 16: Finish Goku's hair by drawing a curved line on top and adding three smaller spikes on the right side of his head.
Step 17: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Goku. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 18: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Goku! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Goku drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Goku drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Goku's hair and eyebrows black and his skin peach. If you don’t have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Goku from Dragon Ball.
