How to Draw Tails
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Miles "Tails" Prower from Sonic the Hedgehog. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start drawing Tails with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: To draw Tails, start with a circle slightly to the left of the page. You don't have to draw the circle perfectly. It's just a basic shape for Tails' head.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines, one vertical and one horizontal, that bend to the contour of the sphere. Draw the horizontal line low on the circle, and draw the vertical line close to the right edge. These will be construction lines that will help you place Tails' features later on.
Step 3: For Tails' ears, draw two big triangles on top of his head on either side of the vertical construction line.
Step 4: Draw a guide for Tails' eyes by drawing an arc similar to an upside-down letter U on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. Draw the right arc should thinner and smaller because of the perspective.
Step 5: Below the left eye, draw a shape similar to a tilted letter D as a guide for Tails' mouth.
Step 6: That's it for the initial sketch of Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog! You have the basic Tails shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 7: Using the lower part of the main circle and the horizontal construction line as a guide, draw Tails' muzzle, which kind of looks like a sausage without an end.
Step 8: On the left side of that shape, draw four curved spikes to represent Tails' cheek fur.
Step 9: On the end of Tails' muzzle, draw his nose. It's basically an upside-down triangle with rounded corners. Shade it in except for a small oval to represent shine.
Step 10: Tighten the shape of Tails' mouth by curving it more and making it narrower. Draw a small curved line on the left end as a laugh line and draw another curved line inside his mouth for his tongue.
Step 11: Darken the shapes that make up Tails' eyes. Inside each eye, draw a long oval for his iris. Inside the iris, draw two more ovals overlapping each other to represent his pupil and glare. Shade in Tails' pupils.
Step 12: Above the right eye, draw three long narrow spikes to represent Tails' hair/fur. When drawing the spikes, make sure they overlap the right ear.
Step 13: Tighten the shapes of Tails' ears by drawing them wider and more round. Draw a triangle inside each along with a curved line to represent the inner structure of the ears. Only draw the portion of the right ear that's not hidden by Tails' hair.
Step 14: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of Miles "Tails" Prower from Sonic the Hedgehog. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 15: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Tails from Sonic the Hedgehog! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Tails drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Tails drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Tails' head yellow-orange, his eyes blue, his tongue pink and the inside part of his ears gray. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Miles "Tails" Prower from Sonic the Hedgehog.
