To draw Sonic step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to go at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, and each step is explained in the text below the photo, so you'll know exactly what to draw in each step. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods! Take your time and draw at your own pace.

The written step-by-step video tutorial:

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for Sonic the Hedgehog's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid.

Step 2: Draw a horizontal line across the bottom of the circle as a guide to help you place Sonic the Hedgehog's facial features later. Draw a curved, vertical line near the left edge for another construction guide.

Step 3: Draw two small, triangular lines on top of the head as guides for the ears. Sonic doesn't have big ears, so don't draw these shapes too big.

Step 4: Below the head, make a small mark for the first part of the guide for Sonic's body. Connect the head to the mark using curved lines to create a long, U-shaped guide. Pay attention to how small and narrow the body is compared to the head.

Step 5: On the lower, right side of the body, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for the first leg. It should slope to the right a bit. At the end of the line, draw a small arc as a guide for the top part of Sonic the Hedgehog's foot. The length of the leg should be about the height of the head. Close off the foot guide with a line at the bottom.

Step 6: To the left, draw another long, vertical line as a guide for Sonic's other leg. At the end of the line, draw a long shape that's curved at the top and flat at the bottom as a guide for the foot.

Step 7: On the lower, right side of the body, draw a small circle as a guide for the first hand. Draw an angled line from the top of the body down to the small circle as a guide for Sonic the Hedgehog's arm.

Step 8: On the lower, left side of the body, draw another small circle as a guide for Sonic's other hand. Draw an angled line from the top of the circle to the top of the body as a guide for the other arm.

That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.

Step 9: Inside the head, where the guide lines intersect, draw a small oval for Sonic the Hedgehog's nose. The oval should be a bit tilted, and the bottom should be narrower than the top.

Step 10: Use the horizontal line as a guide to draw the top part of the mouth section. Follow the path of the guide and darken a curved line on either side of Sonic's nose. On both sides, curve the lines down to create the cheeks. Darken the bottom edge of the big circle to complete this section of the face. Inside this shape, on the right side, draw a small, curved line for the smirk.

Step 11: On top of the mouth section, on the right, draw a big, tall arc for the first part of Sonic the Hedgehog's eyes. Sketch the line lightly at first to get the shape right. Curve the line above the nose for a furrowed brow. When you get the shape right, darken the line. The eyes should take up a big part of the top of the head. On the left side, draw a similar shape but make it narrower. Follow the curvature of the initial circle to draw the left edge of the eye.

Step 12: Inside Sonic's eye on the right, near the middle, draw a long oval for the first iris. On the left side, close to the nose, draw another oval for the other iris. Inside each iris, draw a small oval and shade it in for the pupils. Inside each iris, off to the side, draw a tiny circle for highlight.

Step 13: Darken the triangular shapes on top of the head for Sonic the Hedgehog's ears. Make the ear on the right side a bit longer on the bottom. Inside each ear, draw small triangle for structure. These smaller triangles should be a bit round on the sides and corners.

Step 14: From the ear on the right, draw a long line that curves to the bottom for Sonic the Hedgehog's first spike. At about where the horizontal guide is, angle the line to the left toward the head to finish the triangular spike. Draw a curved line between the ears for the spike that curves back. We can't see the tip of this spike from this angle.

Step 15: On the lower, right side of Sonic the Hedgehog's head, draw a line that's parallel to the arm guide for the next spike. Angle the line up to complete the spike. The two spikes on the right should be similar in size. On the lower, left side of the head, draw a small, V-shaped line for another spike. Darken the left edge of the initial circle to complete the shape of the head.

Step 16: Use the angled line on the right as a guide to draw Sonic's first arm. Follow the path of the guide and make the shape of the arm thicker but not too thick. Sonic the Hedgehog has skinny arms. Don't draw the shape of the arm all the way to the bottom. Leave a space before the circle for the wrist. Draw a series of curved lines above the small circle for the glove's opening.

Step 17: Darken the left side of the small circle but make it flatter for the fist. In the middle of the circle, draw a curved line that's similar to an upside-down letter U for the first folded finger. Connect the finger to the left edge and add another line to the right for another finger. At the top, draw a circle for the thumb. Below the thumb, draw a couple more curved lines for Sonic's remaining fingers.

Step 18: Darken the oval under the head to create Sonic the Hedgehog's body. Don't overlap the shape of the arm or hand on the right as you darken the body. In the middle of the body, draw a small oval for the bare part of Sonic's torso.

Step 19: Lightly sketch the thin shape of the first leg around the long guide line on the right. For the sock, lightly sketch a small square-like shape sitting on top of the shoe. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. Use curvier lines as you darken Sonic's sock.

Step 20: Darken the shape at the bottom to create Sonic's shoe. Draw a line close to the bottom edge of the shape for the shoe's thick sole. In the middle of the shape, draw two curved lines for the shoe's arc-like design.

Step 21: Draw Sonic the Hedgehog's other sock using a series of curved lines. Leave the top of the shape open for the leg. Sketch the shape of the leg around the vertical guide lines. Darken the shape of the leg. Draw the lines near the guide to keep the leg skinny.

Step 22: Darken the shape on the left to create Sonic's shoe. Just like before, draw a line near the bottom edge for the shoe's thick sole. Draw two curved lines in the middle of the shape for the shoe's design.

Step 23: On top of the small circle, on the left, draw a small, square-like shape for the top of the glove. Darken the lines but make the corners and edges curvier. Draw the shape of the angled arm around the initial guide. Draw Sonic's hand inside the small circle. Add a finger on the left and curve the lines at the bottom for the knuckles.

Step 24: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.

Final Step: Color your Sonic the Hedgehog drawing using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use blue for the main part of the body. Use peach or yellow-orange for the ears, lower part of the head, arms and chest. For the eyes, use green with a bit of black at the top. Use black for Sonic's nose. Color the shoes red. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace.
