How to Draw Mario
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Mario from Nintendo's Mario Brothers video games. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start drawing Nintendo's Mario with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: To draw Mario, start with a big circle on the bottom half of the page. This will be the basic shape for Mario's head.
Step 2: Now draw a wide arc on top of the oval so that the end result kind of looks like an egg. This shape will help you draw Mario's hat later on.
Step 3: Inside the main circle, draw two intersecting lines, one vertical and one horizontal. When drawing the lines, bend them so they follow the shape of the sphere. These will be construction lines that will help you place Mario's features later on.
Step 4: Starting where the two construction lines meet, draw an egg shape on the left side of the main circle. Draw the egg shape so it extends outside of the main circle. This is the basic shape for Mario's nose.
Step 5: On top of the horizontal construction line and to the left of the vertical construction line, draw an oval. The left side of the oval should graze the vertical construction line. On the other side of the vertical construction line, draw an arc that follows the same shape as the oval and sits on top of Mario's nose. These will be the eyes of this video game character.
Step 6: On top of Mario's right eye, draw a crescent moon with its points pointing down. Do the same thing over Mario's left eye, except the left point of the crescent moon should touch the top right side of the left eye. These are Mario's eyebrows. Now draw a really wide curved line that starts below the horizontal construction line and extends to the outside of the main circle. With two short lines, conect the long curved line to Mario's nose. This is his moustache.
Step 7: Draw a U-shaped arc that starts where the lower part of Mario's moustache touches the vertical construction line. Make the arc slightly tilted. Now draw a bent line that connects the tops of the U together. This is Mario's mouth. At this point, draw a backward C right under the horizontal construction line, and make the backward C graze the edge of the circle. This is Mario's ear.
Step 8: To draw Mario's hat, you will draw two arcs. Begin at the left of his eyebrow on the construction circle. Draw the arc up and to the left, and then bring it right and curve down to where his ear begins. Now draw another arc behind his head.
Step 9: That's it for the initial sketch of Mario from Nintendo's Mario Brothers video games! You have the basic Mario shape, and now you will go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 10: Darken in Mario's nose except for the upper right side of it. Tighten the moustache by curling the ends and drawing curves underneath it, as well. Draw about five curves under Mario's moustache.
Step 11: Now tighten the shape of Mario's mouth, and then draw a line on the inside of it to create his teeth. Under that line, draw a curve to make his tongue. Darken in the shape of Mario's ear. Draw a curvy and wide E shape to represent the inside of Mario's ear.
Step 12: Darken in the shape of this video game character's eyes and eyebrows. Inside each of Mario's eyes, draw a small curve on the lower right side, and then draw another curve above it that follows the same shape. These will be Mario's irises and pupils. Shade in the inner most curves except for a small circle on the upper right side of each, which will represent glare.
Step 13: Tighten the shape of Mario's face so it is not so circular. Don't forget to draw him a chin. Add in his sideburn, which is a set of two candy cane shapes next to his ear. Draw the backside of his hair, which is a wide, lopsided W shape.
Step 14: Darken in the shape of Mario's hat and draw a semi-circle to the front of it. Inside this curve, draw a letter M. Draw in a curved line to represent the brim of Mario's hat.
Step 15: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of Mario from Nintendo's Mario Brothers video games. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 16: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Mario! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Mario drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Mario drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Mario's cap, the M-shape and his tongue red. His hair should be brown while his eyebrows, moustache and inside his mouth are black. Mario has blue eyes, and his skin is a peach color like the Princess! If you don't have peach, then improvise! Use light orange or pink, or anything that looks good. Experiment! That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Mario from Nintendo's Mario Brothers video games.
